The Barn is back — hopefully as another live music venue on the South side.
The Lethbridge College Barn will be the setting for a one day Band Wars, Jan. 21 featuring 10 local bands who will be competing for an $800 grand prize and $200 for the runner ups. A panel of judges including DJ Booda, The Owl Acoustic lounge Steven Foord, the Slice’s Jesse Freed, Mase One plus Tony Deys from Country 95.5 and Erin Lucas from 94.1 CJOC will choose the winners.
“Response has been pretty good so we will probably have another one later in the semester,” said Band Wars organizer Aaron Chubb, adding this event is a one night affair. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 14.
“We had a lot of metal bands apply. We had 15 bands get back to us. We’ve started listening to all of the MP3s and will choose the top 10 Jan. 14,” he continued adding organizers are looking for a proper representation of all genres, country, rock, punk, metal, folk, blues — everything.
Each band will play a 20 minute set of music beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. and will play right through until midnight.
Winners will be chosen through a combination of the judges’ decision and audience reaction.
“We’re going to have an applause-o-meter,” Chubb continued.
“It’s going to be a pretty tight show,” he continued adding the bands have been given tickets to sell to their fans, though they will also be available at the door and at Lethbridge College for five dollars.
“The Barn has been in a kind of a lull (for live entertainment) but we hae a lot of students here and we want to revive it as a local music venue so they have a reason to come here,” he said.
