NAAG anniversary, classical music and lots more this week

Photo by Richard Amerybecause it is Robbie Burns day, enjoy some scotch, plus there will be poets performing and maybe even bagpipers.


Also tonight, Paul Kype is hosting the open mic at the Slice.
The other big show tonight is  at the NAAG Gallery on the north side, 255 12c Street North. Beginning at 7 p.m., Shotgun Jimmie will be performing along with Jay Baird, Forest Tate Fraser and Zoo Company. Admission is $8. The event runs from 7-10 p.m.

There are a couple of excellent shows this week for classical music enthusiasts.


The Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra Chamber series continues this week at the Southminster United Church, Jan. 28.

The theme is Original Brass, so there will be a variety of compositions for brass instruments performed.
Also for classical music aficionados, Schubertiade winds up literacy day activities at the Lethbridge Public Library downtown branch where University of lethbridge  faculty and students will be performing the works of Schubert beginning at 7 p.m.


And, local classical guitarist Joshua Reuben Fritz will be performing at the College Drive Community Church, Jan. 29.

On Thursday, Jan. 27 check out some up and coming talent during  ‘Rock Band’ at the Yates Memorial Centre.

 There will be 120 Long and McQuade music students forming several different bands to perform 30 different songs.

 Doors open at 6:30 with the show beginning at 7 p.m. While there is no admission to attend, there will be donations taken   which will be given to the Alberta Children’s Hospital music therapy program. Tim Carter from the Chevelles will be the MC for the evening.

 

There is lots going on for the alt-country crowd as well.Check out a free show with Matt Masters and Karen Romanchuk at Cudos Lounge, Jan. 29.

Plus Rob Ursel, The Skilletlikkers and Treeline will be tearing up the Slice, Jan. 29 as well.

 

 


 And if you missed the Clapping Monkeys playing at the Lethbridge College band wars on Friday, check them out at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Jan. 28 with Roderick Watt.


The Owl Acoustic Lounge is going blues, Jan. 29 with the Barrelhouse Boys aka Papa King and Darryl Düus and Steve harris with special guest Leigh Doerksen.


It isn’t music related, but if winter is giving you the blues, then have a laugh with the Snowed in Comedy Tour at Average Joes, Jan. 29 featuring comedians  Dan Quinn, Phil Nichol, Craig Campbell and Glenn Wool.
If you want to play, the Lethbridge Folk Club has their open mic  at the Wolf’s Den, which is on the second and fourth Friday of the month, which means bring your guitar, Jan. 28 and play.


The big folk show this week, takes place on Wednesday with Vancouver based gypsy folk group the Tequila Mockingbird  Orchestra.
The Vancouver based gypsy folk group have played all over the world, but they’ve never played Lethbridge until this week, Jan. 26 at the Slice. Admission to the show is $10.
