The Soles’ new EP “Broken Ghost” is tough to describe. While they bill themselves as a modern punk rock band, that isn’t the first adjective I’d use. They are more of an eclectic pop band.
The EP begins with an angry rant about the homeless by Toronto mayor Rob Ford, which seems out of place on a pretty laid back, almost poetic EP
They are a little bit Said The Whale, a touch of the Stokes, a little bit Dead Milkmen, a lot of the Weakerthans, a touch of Blind Melon and a little bit post grunge ’90s rock a la Jane’s Addiction.
They are a little bit of everything, and the swamp blues harmonica powered “Illusion,” gives them something a little bit extra.
There is even a little bit of reggae on “ the spiritual “Salvation.”
The Ep is a pleasant listen as lead singer Din has a pretty distinctive voice, which makes a lot of the songs sound pretty similar, though no less enjoyable.
The last track, “Joy” is especially joyful with pretty arpeggios and mellow melodies.
Overall the EP is a pleasant listen with a lot of laid back variety.
