Edmonton raised, Toronto based singer/ keyboardist Brenna MacQuarrie has sang everything, but soul music is what really speaks to her.
“I definitely have training. I've sang disco, theatre, R and B and even classical,” said MacQuarrie from Saskatoon, where she is in the middle of a tour with Jory Kinjo.
They will be coming to The Tongue n Groove, June 24.
“I also play keyboardist, but my vocals is where I’m strongest. I’ve been singing for half of my 22 years,” she said.
“There’s some genres I’ll stay away from. I’m not much of a metalhead, but soul is the strongest genre for me. It allows me to show a lot of power and a lot of range,” she said.
MacQuarrie released her debut CD “Hybrid” in January.
She and drummer Fred Brenton and guitarist Arun Bhaumik recorded it at the Sound Extractor Studio in Edmonton with producer Brad Smith. It has garnered great response.
“It is really well done, but it definitely has a studio sound, but it doesn’t quite capture the sound I make on stage. It’s pretty different. There’s a lot more energy on stage. The album is very chill, but we really amp it up in the live performance,” she said adding she is looking forward to making her Lethbridge debut.
“It’s pretty easy listening,” she described.
“It’s music you can just sit and listen to it and have a beer to,” she said.
She and bassist Jory Kinjo will share the backing band and play in each other’s band.
“There’s four of us. Jory is my bass player and I’m his keyboard player and Fred and Arun are on the CD, so they know the music,” she continued adding they have been touring with Kinjo for a week and things are going very well.
“It’s been fantastic. It’s two different styles. Jory’s set is more R and B and funk,” she said.
“ I like to cover some big, power vocals and I also do some originals,” she said.
Tickets for the show, which begins at 9 p.m., June 24, cost $10.
