CKXU celebrating record store day

University of Lethbridge radio station CKXU, 88.3 FM, is giving vinyl a new spin, Sept. 17 in Galt Gardens with the first ever record store day.
In addition to the station thinning out their vinyl collection of material they aren’t allowed to play under their license agreement, they Lustre Creame’s Aaron Trozzo. Photo by Richard Amerywill be inviting several other vendors.

“ It’s not a record sale,” said CKXU station manager Aaron Trozzo.

“For a nominal donation of about two dollars, you can take home one of a plethora of about 5,000 records from the CKXU vaults.

“I’m not going to lie to you, there will be a lot of classic rock and ’80s indie pop,” said Trozzo. There will also be CDs.

“It’s stuff we won’t be able to play for years. Basically we‘re running out of space, so we’re selling most of our vinyl collection and memorabilia,” he said.
“We’re doing this to relieve ourselves of about 5,000 albums and CDs. Stuff that we’ve acquired or has been donated to us,” he continued.

“It’s going to be great, you can come and basically fill your pockets,” he said, adding listening to music on vinyl is a more personal and interactive experience.

“Vinyl is coming back. It just has  a warmer sound. And because people have to get up and turn the record album, they are more inclined to listen to the entire album,” Trozzo observed.

But it won’t just be CKXU, approximately a dozen vendors including Blueprint Records in Lethbridge, Heritage Posters in Calgary and Too North Records to name just a few will also be participating.

There is also room for up to 20 vendors so CKXU will be accepting vendors up until the day of the event, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A table and two chairs will cost $70 for prospective vendors.
“It’s nice to have so much music to share.”

Organizers are working on arranging food vendors, but there will also be a variety of arts and crafts, feather hair extensions, posters and a lot of other music related memorabilia.

There will also be live music throughout the day. So far local acts Lustre Creame and Fist City as well as some surprise guests from Calgary have been scheduled to play.

A version of this story appears in the Sept. 14, 2011 edition of the Lethbridge Sun Times.
