The Owl Acoustic Lounge was packed to the rafters with an enthusiastic audience, Sept. 16 as an eclectic group of local musicians took the stage to pay homage to their favourite female singers.

Brenna Lowrie was up first with a set of upbeat folk including a Loretta Lynn cover.
Unfortunately I missed Jesse Northey and Bente Hansen, but arrived back in time for the last part of Lotion’s loud, punk meets ’60s pop set.Lotion has fun on stage for Lady Love. Photo by Richard Amery

Lotion was there for a good time, having fun with ’50s and ’60s  pop hits  like “My Boyfriend’s Back,” and “Leader of the Pack,” and had most of the audience dancing in front of the stage and singing along.

I was actually very impressed with Femme Fatale, which included Tyson Wiebe and guitar and Clayton Smith on drums as well as the powerful voice of Katie Streibel who sang a capable version of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5,” to open their set.

Other highlights were No Doubt’s “Spiderwebs,” which had the crowd pogoing at Streibel’s request. They ended their set with  a decent version of Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart.”The Ketamines closing off Lady Love. Photo by Richard Amery

A revamped version of the Ketamines, this time featuring Joel Butler on guitar, but without keyboardist Jane Edmundson or guitarist Evan Van Reekum, closed the show with an upbeat and fun set of loud rock, which had the audience smiling.

I don’t know the amount raised for the two non-profit groups, but they did all right as there was a $10 voluntary contribution at the door.
