Peter Katz, jazz and classical music this week

Peter Katz hopes people will slow down,relax and take a listen when he returns to Lethbridge, May 7 to play the Slice in support of his new CD “Still Mind Still.”Girls, Girls, Girls return to Lethbridge this week. Photo by Richard Amery
The Toronto based singer/ songwriter is very pleased with his mellowest CD yet. “Still Mind Still” was produced with friend and collaborator and some time touring mate Rob Szabo..
The show is Monday, May 7 at 9 p.m. at the Slice. Tickets are $10.


The Great Lake Swimmers  enjoy doing things differently.  They recorded their previous four albums in a variety of unorthodox venues like churches and abandoned buildings, finally making it into a professional studio for their fifth and latest CD “New Wild Everywhere,” and this week, played on a boat on the Seines River in Paris, France.
 They will be  playing  a special fundraiser for CKXU, 88.3 FM, at the Southminster United Church, May 8, put on by Mike Spencer and the Geomatic Attic.
Cold Specks are also playing. Tickets for the show, which begins at  8 p.m. sharp, will cost $32.50.


You can see three different sides of Hank and Lily this weekend at the Slice and Owl.
 The vaudeville inspired Victoria duo will be returning to Lethbridge for three shows May 4-6.
Tickets for May the Fourth be with you Star Wars party cost $15 in advance. Cinco DeMayo costs $10, both of them are at the Slice. There is no charge for the Owl Acoustic Lounge acoustic Hank and Lily show.


There are several other shows worth checking out as well, as per usual.
The Lethbridge Jazz  Society is putting on a tribute to Motown with a little help for Hippodrome. The event is May 4 at the Sandman Inn. The show begins at 8 p.m.. Tickets cost $20 for members, $25 for non-members.


 Also on May 4 the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra winds down their season with their fifth edition of their Chamber Series. Ronelle Schaufele (Boehm), viola: Nigel Boehm, cello will be performing at the Southminster United Church.
 They also wind down their masters series, May 7 with 2011 Young Artist Competition winner Matt Groenheide playing timpani and the University of Lethbridge Conservatory Strings.

If you want to laugh, Yuk Yuks comedy is back  at Average Joes with Stan Thomson, James Moore and Randy Webb.
The Slice ha s a pretty mellow folk/ pop show with Savk, the Magnetic North and the Archers, who play May 3.
A couple of late announced shows happen at the Owl Acoustic Lounge this week.


 On Thursday, May 3, United Kingdom rock trio Girls, Girls, Girls return to Lethbridge to play a show with Lethbridge psychobilly/ punk trio the Phantom Creeps. There is no cover for the show, which begins at approximately 9 p.m.
Dalliance Elixir , featuring Jolene Draper, Bruce Roome and Murray Nelson, will be playing  jazz/pop and blues music at the Owl Acoustic lounge on Friday, May 4.


 Also for blues, Darryl Düus and Papa King return to the Owl on Saturday, May 5 while Riviera Paradise will be playing the Mocha Cabana both Friday and Saturday.


 If you like laid back jazz, James Oldenburg has a couple gigs this week. He will be playing a solo show at Ric’s Grill tonight (May 2). The next day he does double duty playing with HBO3 (Brad Brouwer and Paul Holden) at the Trianon Wine Bar, Friday, May 4 at 5 p.m.. After that the trio go to the Sandman in for the Lethbridge Jazz Society’s Tribute to Motown with Hippodrome.
Oldenburg and Paul Holden play Streatside Eatery at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 5.
