Sunparlour Players and Kalle Mattson entertain intimate audience

The Sunparlour Players didn’t have as big of a crowd as I thought they’d have at the Slice, Monday, Oct. 15.The Sunparlour Players Andrew Penner. Photo by Richard Amery
I luckily caught the last two upbeat pop songs of Kalle Mattson and his band’s set.

They were very tight and powered by up-tempo trumpet, some harp and a lot of catchy pop tinged melodies.

The Sunparlour Players, now trimmed down to a multi-instrumental duo of Andrew Penner and Michael Rosenthal killed it.

They started slow and picked up the tempo. They began with a few from their new EP “Preserves, then moved into more popular material known by the approximately 25 people in attendance.

Frontman Penner alternated between bass pedals, guitar, an actual bass and a lot of banjo.

It made for a mesmerizing show. I’m always impressed watching them play multiple instruments simultaneously.

They ranged from slower, longer jams to back to the basics rock, for which Penner played throbbing bass rather than just bass pedals, backed by thundering drums.
