CKXU’s big FUNDrive covers night had a decent turnout at the Slice, Oct. 27. A good sized audience enjoyed an array of door prizes and  Planet Telex’s Tyson Wiebe sings the Smalls. Photo by Richard Amerya weird, wild selection of reinterpreted covers of prairies based bands for Pride of the Prairies.

Pride of the Prairies was one of several events taking place for the University of Lethbridge based community  radio station’s annual Fundrive. They have a goal of $12,000 they would like to raise to pay for equipment upgrades to help keep the station running.

I missed  Concrete Towns and Sugar Mountain and just missed betterthird tackle an array of Jann Arden covers, but arrived in time the hear the duo Shipbreaker “raise betterthird’s Jann Arden with a kd lang.

They completely reinterpreted one of K.D. Lang‘s big hits, turning it into an extended techno influenced jam featuring prerecorded beats, live bass and guitar. That one song took up the band’s entire set.

I stuck around to see what Planet Telex would do with their set of songs by ’90s Edmonton based sludge rockers the Smalls.
They ended up doing a pretty close to note perfect versions of Small standards “Payload,” “My Little Angle” a country tinged Smalls song and even their cover of “You MShipbreaker plays a techno version of a kd lang hit. Photo by Richard Ameryake Me Feel like a Natural Woman.”

Tyson Wiebe pretty much perfectly hit all of Smalls singer Mike Caldwell’s high notes, while the rest of the band nailed the Smalls’ huge riffs.
Unfortunately I missed Jon Martin, Paul Holden and Clayton Smith’s set of Neil Young covers.
