Grandview , Manitoba singer/ songwriter Kayla Luky is excited about getting on the road again and learning a few things fellow Manitoban Dan Frechette.

“You can’t live in a car with someone and not learn a few things,” said the alt country songwriter, packing the car for the trip.Kayla Luky and her band. Photo by Richard Amery

“He’s been at it for a lot longer than I have. So it will be nice to learn from him,” said Luky, who released her first CD 10 years ago.
“We’ve played a lot of the same places. I played the Winnipeg Library once and he must have liked what he heard,” she said.

While she usually tours with a band, she will be playing this show solo. She recently recorded a CD with her stand-up bass player Ben Hadaller who used to be in her band and who she met trough her drummer.

“It’s an old time country EP we recorded it in an old abandoned house. He plants trees during the summer so his time in the band was pretty short lived,” she said.

She will be putting a lot of kilometres on her car in the next few weeks. She finishes an extensive tour with Dan Frechette on June 2 and then joins her band for a trek out east for NorthbyNortheast music festival date in Toronto on June 14. But she is excited about returning to play the Owl Acoustic Lounge.

“Probably everybody says it but the Owl is my favourite place to play in Canada. The people are great, the food is great and we always a have a great crowd and Mel and Steve are great,” she said.

”I’ll be playing a lot of music from my CD and my CD with Ben. I’m from a small town, north of Dauphin so there will be  a lot of stories about that,” she said adding she doesn’t know if she will join Frechette on  stage.
“We haven’t discussed it yet. We’ll see how each show goes.”
