The Void releases new CD with video and a robot

Local alternative rock band  the Void introduced their new CD RobotSpaceLove to an enthusiastic audience at the Slice, May 31. They also premiered the new video for the first single “Robot Song From The Void’s robot dances with Shaela Miller and Brent Sorge.  While I missed opening act Planet Telex, I caught a strong set of acoustic rock from Jeremy Cowpar aka Mr. Personal. I haven’t seen him perform for years. He usually plays his own brand of acoustic music mixed with howling lyrics like a metalhead. He did the same here, playing a similar set of crowd favourites like the last time. But as a bonus, The Void’s Jon Vornbrock joined him on bass for a few songs, as did Void drummer Dean Wilson, who joined him for the end of the set. A couple of songs at the end of the set were newer, “ the Last Smoke,” “With Sorrow” and “Stay The Night” were also highlights.

After Cowpar’s set, a movie screen was unveiled for the premiere of the Robot Song From Robot Son. The concept was the band builds a robot, which falls in love with The Void lead singer Jon Vornbrock, set to the sound of the song and the band playing in the background.

The Void brought the audience back to the ’90s,  doing their best impression of the Smashing Pumpkins with just a touch of Pearl Jam.
They had a lot of angst, a lot of strong vocal melodies and lots of post grunge guitar playing.

The robot from the video made an appearance on the dance floor to dance with most of the people dancing in front of the stage during “Robot Song From Robot Son.”

They picked up the tempo midway through the end of a set dominated by relatively slower songs.
They also  played the Owl Acoustic Lounge June 6 with Lustre Creame.
