Moose Jaw born, Saskatoon based punk garage rock/grindcore duo The Faps are not as angry as they sound on record.
They will be playing the Slice With Pandas In Japan as well as local punk/ garage rock trio the Ruby Plumes and duo betterhalf, Monday, July 15 at the Slice.
“We’re actually very chill, relaxed and totally non-confrontational people, so when people hear us screaming, it’s weird,” said Faps guitarist Skyler Cafferata, who along with best friend and drummer Blair Colwell, make up the duo who started jamming together last year after their previous band broke up due to creative differences.
“We’re kind of just best friends who like to play together, we play punk, blues and folk. It’s all of our influences bunched together,” he described.
“ Our other band fell apart because of creative differences. Our other guitar player was a full time student. So one time at rehearsal, Blair said jokingly, but he wasn’t really joking, that the two of us should form a grindcore side project called the Faps. So when all of that band fell apart, that’s what we did,” he said. They released the “ded lake Ep” with Pandacorn’s Brodie Mohninger soon after and released it officially in April.
“It shows where we were as a band at that time. It’s pretty loud and aggressive music, but it allowed us to get out our frustrations,” he continued adding they had advance versions of it out in February to tour with, when they first played Lethbridge at the Owl Acoustic Lounge.
“It was the same night as the D.O.A. show, so nobody was at our show, though a bunch of people came after it,” he recalled.
He noted it is both easier and harder to tour as a duo.
“There is a lot less conflict because there are a lot less cooks in the kitchen, so there’s fewer schedules to work around. So it’s very different from being in a four or five piece band, but there is always somebody else to bounce ideas off of. There is also a lot less gear. We can travel in a mini-van, ” he continued.
They are excited to be back on the road with fellow Saskatoon band Pandas in Japan and local acts the Ruby Plumes and betterhalf.
“Pandas in Japan are a three piece from Saskatoon. We liked what we heard of the Ruby Plumes and I believe betterhalf are a duo too, so it is a good fit,” he said.
“We’re from Moose Jaw originally, and it’s a weekday so we know how hard it is to get people out to shows in a smaller city. Even if you don’t like the music , you will have fun because we‘re having fun,” he said.
Tickets for the show cost five dollars in advance from Blueprint or seven dollars at the door.
