CKXU’s Love and Records 3 was a hit, Sept. 14 in Galt Gardens.
What seemed like thousands of people crowded Galt Gardens prowling around numerous booths and listening to an awesome line up of music. While I was busy cooking hamburgers for the hungry crowd.
I caught parts of the Hibikiya Drummers who put on their usual strong show of thunderous percussion.
The Junkman’s choir played an eclectic set of roots and jazz music which impressed the audience. After that Stars From Streetlights sorted out a few technical issues and brought the upbeat pop to heat up a beautiful day.
I also caught one of my favourites Alyssa McQuaid who played some of her most popular songs from her CDs including her excellent cover of “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”
And while Gold didn’t make it down from Calgary, it meant Five Alarm Funk, who most of the people were waiting for, could play a longer set an hour earlier.
They were incredible as always, playing energetic horn powered jazz and funk music with liberal doses of humour. The two drummers melded well together and the horn section played as if they were one gigantic , multi-lipped jazz powered beast.
The band’s consummate showman Tom Towers, sporting a Second World War aviator's helmet flailed away at his djembes, backed off to play air guitar with one of the two guitarist’s guitar cases, then jumped up and down behind his drums.
They played several new songs about their killer ice cream man themed CD but the crowd, dancing and jumping in the middle of the amphitheatre wouldn’t let them leave until they played an encore.
