Talking to the Deaner of the FUBAR cult films fame will always put a smile on your face. He brings his band Night Seeker back to Lethbridge, Aug. 28 to play Scores with special guests, Space Wolves and Riot City.
“ I tried a new beer called Modello. I tried it because I thought it was called Bordello,” quipped the Deaner, who is known for his love for partying and shotgunning many a beer.
While he had to buy it at a liquor store instead of going to Mexico for it, his alter ego Paul Spence just returned from a trip to Mexico.
“ I didn’t feel anything from the beer so I looked at the label and it was only four per cent. So I guess it really is buyer beware,” he continued riffing on several different versions of Caveat Emptor and talking about getting trashed on tequila and burying himself in sand on the beach overnight,
In between “given’er” with his band Night Seeker ( lead guitarists The Knob Goblin and Metal Ian and Poof the Magic Drummer), the Deaner, who plays bass and sings in the band, is busy working on a new album.
“We’re working on the new record which is pretty sweet,” he said.
The Deaner wrote a book last year called “Just Giver” about how to give’r which has done will.
“ It’s a self help guide Me and Terry (his parter in crime in FUBAR) wrote it. It talks about how to give’r and the importance of given’r. And it has a lot of pictures for people who can’t read,” he said.
He is proud of his band.
“We call him (the drummer) Poof, because he vanishes before shows. We don’t know where he goes, but he always shows up on time for the show,” he continued.
“ We’re gigging here and there. We’ve done Toronto and Ottawa and four or five songs around there. And we’re going to go to B.C,” he said.
He is excited about his new songs.
“We have one about a guy who has to sleep with a priestess to save the live of his girlfriend,” he said adding he has another on about women who leave bite marks.
“ I still want to add more songs to it,” he said.
“ And I have another one called ‘God Gave Rock And Roll To Me,’ because I passed out and it came to me in a dream. So I try to pass out in the same place in hopes that the same thing would happen again,” but it hasn’t,” he added.
He is excited to party in Lethbridge again. He visited for a pre-Christmas show last December and brought Night Seeker to Lethbridge a couple years ago.
“People in Lethbridge just get it. They love to party. You can’t party without rock and roll music,” he said.
“ But people go to dance clubs to party and I don’t get that. Sometime a chick will will take me to a dance club and they”lll play dance music on the radio. And they say say the same thing over and over again (in the music) They keep saying ‘turn it up’.’ For me it’s turn it off. Turn the car around and take me back to the club and I’ll walk home,” the Deaner laughed.
So don’t expect to hear any dance music at the show.
“ Maybe some ladies will come up on stage with me again. We’ll play some of the new songs and some of music from FUBAR 1 and FUBAR 2 and a couple of covers. We let the guitar player pick them so he can learn them. We don’t call him Metal Ian for nothing. So there will be some Priest and Dio and Halen,” he said.
He enjoys touring with Night Seeker and returning to the same cities.
“ We’re starting to see some of the same people at the shows. It is so cool to see them again,” he said.
“ So come out.Thursday is the new Saturday, though for us every day is Saturday,” he enthused.
The Deaner and Night Seeker , Riot City and the Space Wolves play Scores, Aug. 28 at 9 p.m. Advance tickets cost $20.
