New Brunswick based bluesman Ross Neilsen isn’t being constrained by blues music or any other genre of music on his endless tour which brings him to the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Jan. 30.
“It’s been good. The shows right after New Year’s have been a hard sell because everyone is still recovering,” Neilsen observed from Coburg, Ontario.
“ This tour has been all acoustic though i have me electric guitars but the first few venues were smaller, so they were acoustic shows,” he said.
“ I don’t really do a lot of acoustic shows, though I have my steel resonator guitar. It’s been a nice change,” he said .
“ Other times I’ve tended to think I can’t play this song because it’s not bluesy enough. I haven’t been constrained by it this time. I’ve been playing everything from John Prine to the Grateful Dead. I‘ve been playing whatever I feel like and people seem be enjoying it. So I guess the variety is helping everyone,” he said.
He released his most recent CD “Resurrection” last year, and as soon as he gets off the road at the end of March.
“ I’ll probably take a break and write music for a new album for the end of the year. Or I might get a job as a sideman for somebody It would be nice to just play guitar and not worry about booking anything. Just get on stage, play guitar, get paid and go home. Sometimes a break is as good as a rest,” he said.
“I’ve been touring steadily since 2007,” he said.
“ I haven’t done a lot of playing with the band. but we have a tour in Alberta with the band in the summer” he said adding for now he is excited to play his solo show at the Owl Acoustic Lounge.
“I’m looking forward to coming back out west, though not in the winter. But it will be good to see old friends. it will be a good time,” he said.
“ I have all my guitars with me, so I’ll set them up and see which ones call out to me,” he continued.
“I’ll be running the gamut. I won’t just be playing quote unquote just blues music,” he said.
