While last week was all about jazz music, the next week is about a whole lot more with a variety of shows ranging from the Centric classical music festival, a lot of rock shows, plenty of roots and much more happening. That’s not even including all of the local talent performing at the Rotary Dragon Boat Festival, June 26-28.
Much of the week is dominated by classical music courtesy of the Centric Music Festival.
So there will be a variety of Lethbridge performers all week from June 24-28 plus special guests including Mexican pianist / composer Luis Ramirez, Winnipeg's the Bison Duo and Banff vocalist Heather Jean Jordan performing throughout the week at special concerts, mostly at CASA.
June 26 will be a great night for singing with Southern Alberta talent at the Slice with some of Southern Alberta’s finest roots and country musicians. Dave McCann will be performing along with Claresholm’s Tin and the Toad plus local roots rock act Rancho Deluxe and rock and Tyler Bird’s rock act Queen of the Worms
The show begins at 9 p.m. sharp. There will be a $10 cover.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge brings back Golden B.C. via New Zealand songwriter Ben Caldwell returns to the Owl Acoustic Lounge with his International folk road show, June 26.
The other big folk show of the week has been cancelled to poor ticket sales. Grand Forks, B.C. French Canadian folk duo Vazzy, were to close off the Lethbridge Folk Club’s season at the Wolf’s Den, June 26. Their new CD has just been nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for best French Canadian album.
St. Jean Baptiste Day celebrations take place at Pavan Park, June 26. Banff based band the Michael Provencer band will be performing at 6 p.m. There will be fun, games and a beer gardens.
But there is a whole lot of rock happening well.
Vancouver pop punk band Gob return to Lethbridge on June 26 as well when they play Scores with local band the Youngbloods and Open 24-7. Advance tickets cost $20. The show begins at 9 p.m.
The big rock show of the week was just announced on the weekend
Average Joes will be bringing in Michigan rockers Pop Evil, June 25. The show begins at 9:30 p.m. Pop Evil are getting ready to release a new CD “UP’ on Aug 21. They have several radio hits including “Footsteps,”Take It All”, “ Beautiful,” “ Deal with the Devil and number one hit “ Torn To Pieces.”
There is a big female powered metal show at Inferno, June 25 with Ontario stripped down garage rock and punk band Artificial Dissemination’s “Take Us to Your Leader Tour” with Perception of Pain. Doors open at 8 p.m. There is a $10 cover.
The rock and roll begins early in the week with a big show at the Slice featuring Vancouver rock/ blues/ punk goth collective Eric Campbell and the Dirt, Vancouver punk / hardcore band Brass, Jay Arner and Jessica Delisle’s indie rock/ reggae psychedelic duo Energy Slime and local alternative rock band the Supervoid plus local punk trio Advertisement. There is a $10 cover for that show.
The Slice‘s other big all local rock show is June 27 with Pistols and Parachutes, Left is Always Right or LIAR and Lethbridge folk/ indie rock band The Silkstones performing. There is a $10 cover for the show, which begins at 9 p.m.
If you want to rock and roll, local rock band Obsidian Soul is hosting a metal open mic at Inferno, June 27 9 p.m.
If you want to laugh, the Owl Acoustic Lounge features their stand up comedy open mic, June 24 as well.
There are a couple of sweet jazz and blues shows as well.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge features local jazz/ contemporary jazz band the Groove Apostles. And the Slice brings back Rooster Davis, Ann Vriend and trombonist Brad Shigeta on June 25. They are beginning a quick tour in support of their new CD “For Saints and Sinners. There is a $10 cover for the show.
And get in the mood for Shakespeare in the Park’s upcoming production of Much Ado About Nothing with two nights of sonnets, scenes and songs at the Mocha Cabana, June 26 and 27 at 6:30 p.m. each night.
The biggest event of the week is the Rotary Dragon Boat Races, June 26-28 at Henderson Lake park which features a veritable who’s who of Lethbridge music and dance.
A variety of performers from country to rock perform on opening night, June 26 with country singer Dusty Dee Litchfield opening the show at 4:30 p.m. followed by pop/ jazz singer Bridgette Yarwood at 5:30 p.m.
Blues/ rock band Paul Kype and Texas Flood take the stage after the opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m., the Desert Wind Belly dancers perform after them. And Fast Times rock the rest of the night away at 8:30, p.m.
The next day things begin at noon with the Rose Ceremony, June 27. After that a variety of music will be interspersed with dance demonstrations. Edmonton based country/pop singer Alyssa McQuaid returns home to play at 12:30 p.m. She will be followed by the Hibikaya drummers, rockabilly band Bent 8, Exisdance, country/ roots musician Shaela Miller and her band, local roots musician Karen Romanchuk, country band Breanne Urban and Southern Flyer, the Canadian Rocky Mountain Cloggers, Bridgette Yarwood and Quick Draw McGraw winding things up at 7 p.m.
Things start early on June 28 with the E-Free band playing at 11 a.m. followed by Edmonton based Miss Teen Canada 2012 pop singer Nakita Kohan, Urban Dance, local country singer Trevor Panczak and Medicine Hat folk rock duo Mahoney.
The week isn’t over yet as there is also a big metal and rock show on Sunday, June 28 with Fox Eyes, the Dirti Speshuls and Vancouver rock band the Toxiks. The show begins at 9 p.m. The cover is pay what you want.
