Regina experimental rock/ alt country band Snake River return to Lethbridge to play the Slice for the Electric Eye Volunteer Appreciation night with the Versions and fellow Saskatchewan rock band the Faps, Sept. 25 at the Slice.
But they are most excited to introduce the continuing story of the McKruskis, the married couple frontman/ guitarist/ keyboard player Chris Sleightholm introduced on Snake River's last album “McKruski.”
The story continued on “Songs From the Adjacent Room,” which features about their experiences reflecting on their lives and 16 year old while hungover in the fictional town of Snake River on Feb. 2, 1989, a few weeks before the events of the first album.
“There’s no significance to the date,” Sleightholm said.
“Writing a story is more interesting as a writer. It’s easier to write about characters rather than everyday things which can be boring,” he continued.
He said the band was impressed after playing the Electric Eye Music Festival on May 9.
He said the new CD was more of a band effort.
“I wrote all of the songs on the last album. On this one, the other guys added their ideas and I was surprised at how they evolved,” he said.
“They took on a different life,” he continued, adding the music and the songs are interesting enough on its own, but there is a deeper meaning if listeners pay attention to the lyrics for extra depth.
“It’s kind of like their memories in the songs. It’s like they’re jumping through time” he said.
The story meant some of the songs are longer, as long as 10 minutes in one case.
“In order to get the whole story, they ended up longer. But people seem to like that,” he said.
“They still required a lot of editing,” he said.
The show, featuring the Faps and the Versions, starts at 9:30 p.m. at the Slice. Cover is by donation.
