This is a great week for Edmonton rock bands and rock music in general, with a mountain full of great rock and roll happening throughout the week.
But the week opens up with laughter as the Owl Acoustic Lounge hosts their monthly stand up comedy open mic, May 25.
It’s good thing you can take a breather on Thursday night, because music lovers will need to make some tough choices both Friday and Saturday night.
Edmonton psychedelic jam rock band Royal Tusk wind up their cross Canadian tour at Studio, May 27 with Vancouver born punk/ noise rock band Fake Shark and local alternative rock band the Supervoid. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $15.
If you love Metallica, thrash metal and banging your head, you won’t want to miss local high powered Metallica tribute Damage Incorporated who play Coyote Joes with Sidestepping the Sun, May 27. Tickets are five dollars in advance, $10 at the door. The show begins at 8:30 p.m.
For something a little more laid back, Calgary based rockabilly/ old school rock and roll band Hi Strung Downers visit the Owl Acoustic Lounge the same night. In a similar vein, the next night, May 28, Ginger St. James returns to Lethbridge to play the Owl Acoustic Lounge in support of her new CD “One For the Money.”
But if you just want to get in the mood for South Country Fair, and maybe play a few songs, stop by the Slice, May 27 where you can learn about this year’s stellar line up at the line up launch and open mic which begins at 8 p.m. It takes the place of their usual South Country Fair songwriting competition this year.
May 28 has some solid shows.
Grande Prairie born country band Emerson Drive return to Average Joes, May 28. They have topped the charts with numerous hits including “I Should Be Sleeping,” “Last One Standing” and “Moments” plus their latest hits “Who We Are” and “Good Hurt” from last year’s “Tilt a Whirl” EP.
The music begins at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $40.
Down the road at the Slice put a little rock in your socks and weirdness into you life with Edmonton based surf rock inspired trio Tallest to Shortest which feature Mark Feduk and Sean Brewer of the Uncas and Red Ram putting their own strange take of surf and hard rock music.
On the north side there is a fundraiser for Fort McMurray fire victims at Honkers Pub and a spaghetti dinner beginning at 3 p.m. There is a $10 cover. There will also be live music with Steve Keenan, Aaron Landry, Frank Gutjahr, Andy Macnamara, Coda, Band of
Brothers, Good Time Charlie, Left is Always Right, Driving While Blind
and MC Kelly Klimchuk.
During the day, May 28 Dory and The Weathermen will be playing a free family festival at Civic Centre Park behind the YMCA. it will be fundraiser for the YMCA as well as the Lethbridge Sport Council. There will also be an astro jump, petting zoo, volleyball, face-painting and a teddy bear hospital, so bring in your bears for repair. It begins at 11 a.m.
The next week begins with the Young Benjamins hosting the Owl Acoustic Lounge open mic on May 30.
