A very cool Tuesday rock show drew decent crowd on an off night to the Slice, March 7.
While I missed a hot opening set from local alternative rockers Fox Eyes, I was just in time for Montreal’s Dany Laj and the Looks.
They played scrappy ’60s style garage rock to begin a tight set of songs mostly from their new CD “Alive & Kicking.”
They switched into a more ’90s power pop mode, with plenty of crunchy, catchy jangling upbeat guitar which reminded me a little of Sloan, a touch of the Replacements , a tad Tom Petty and more modern bands like the Dudes, especially due to Dany Laj’s voice which was eerily reminiscent of the High Kicks/The Dudes’ Danny Vacon.
Bassist Jeanette Dowling played with a lot of groove, laying down some catchy bass licks.
It is great to see local hard rock/ power pop band the Dirti Speshuls playing more often. They closed off a Tuesday night with some energetic ’90s style power pop music along the lines of Treble Charger.
They opened with a couple of up tempo rockers from their debut CD.
They moved on to some newer material featuring plenty of crunchy guitar and a relentless rhythm plus some melodic solos.
