Harp master Paul Reddick is pretty laid back considering he just won a Juno Award for his latest CD “Ride the One.”
He brings his band to the Geomatic Attic, April 25.
“It’s been a pretty exciting week. I can’t even describe it,” said Reddick, recovering from a busy week which included performing in Ottawa during the Juno Award festival.
“I’ve been nominated twice before. It was such a surprise. I didn’t expect it considering I was up against people like Colin Linden and Colin James,” he said.
“It was so great. Colin Cripps produced the album and he’s a great producer,” he said.
“It feels great to be recognized,” he said, adding he didn’t know what to expect when he began recording.
“I knew it would be called ‘Ride the One’ because I wanted to experiment with one chord blues,” he said, noting he always likes to experiment with common blues forms.
“Helping put blues into other contexts in one of my goals,” he said.
Reddick noted it is important to keep the interest in the blues alive and to discover new blues talent. So in conjunction with the Toronto Blues Society, he created the Cobalt Prize for Best Blues Composition.
Edmonton’s Ann Vriend won this year’s prize, for her song “All That I Can.”
Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer’s “Father’s Son” won second and pianist Michael Kaeshammer’s “Sweet Grace,” placed third.
“We got great feedback from it,” he said.
He is excited to bring his band, including MonkeyJunk frontman Steve Marriner.
He said Lethbridge audiences can expect to hear songs from throughout his career.
“I’ll play most of the songs from the new album and a few songs from the last 10 years,” he said adding he has released seven albums over the past 15 years.
“ I do like the Ride the One album a lot,” he said.
