Metal and much more kick off August

Bang your head into August because there are a lot of metal shows happening this week.


 Calgary death metal quintet Widow’s Peak return to Lethbridge with local band Drearius and  Winnipeg death metal band Anomalism at the Slice, July 30. The Wide Skies music Festival dominates the first part of the week with  a variety of talent performing , Tuesday July 30 and Wednesday July 31. the feJames Oldenburg plays several shows this week. Photo by Richard Amerystival begins with a free show outside of Southminster United Church with Danny Michel, Vancouver Latin jazz band Carmanah and Vancouver rockabilly trio Cousin Harley playing the main stage.


 A variety of local bands play the second stage including the Steve Keenan Band, George Fowler and Megan Brown of Junkman’s Quire and more.


 After that, there is a special ticketed event in the Southminster United Church at 10:30 p.m. featuring Cousin Harley’s Paul Pigat, Danny Michel, Sofia Viola and Lara Mina Mitic of Carmanah.
The next day, The Wide Skies Music Festival continues at Casa with a ticketed outdoor event  beginning at 7 p.m.. Sofia Viola and MonkeyJunk’s Steve Marriner and Harry Manx playing as their new duo Mainline. Tickets are $37.50.


 Festival passes are $50 including admission to both ticketed events.


CKXU Summer sessions returns to Theoretically Brewing, Aug. 2 with pop band Phouka, morii and Willy Big Bull playing at 7 p.m.,Friday, Aug. 2.


The Owl Acoustic lounge a has a big rock show with John Lost and the Cause, I Am The Mountain and Max Hopkins, Aug. 2.

 The Owl Acoustic Lounge features local bands The Cayley plus 21st Avenue and Jacob Hutchison.
 The Slice also has a whole lot of rock this weekend, with Calgary ’70s style metal band King Mammoth and Threshold of Pain playing on Friday, Aug. 2. The next night, the Slice says so long to Victoria and Cole with music from local roots/ rock performers Cordurouy Brown aka Jame Swinney, Makiisma and Chris Drew.
 Across from that enjoy nice weather with Carifest in Galt Gardens, all day long, July 30 with exotic food, live music, dance and more throughout the day beginning at 11 a.m.
 James Oldenburg has a busy weekend. He is playing with Paul Holden at Streatside Eatery at 5:30 p.m. Saturday Aug. 3. He is also playing solo shows at the Watertower Grill at 8 p.m , Aug. 2 and 3.

 

Local rock band Lawless Murphy plays Casino Lethbridge , Aug. 2 and 3 at 8 p.m. each night.

There is live comedy as well. As it’s the end of the month the Owl Acoustic Lounge has their monthly comedy open mic, Wednesday, July 31. There is always comedy at Good Times. This week Solly KP will be performing musical comedy and Connor Christmas at Good Times, Saturday, Aug. 3.
As always Good Times has an amateur comedy night, Thursday.


Shakespeare in the Park as a busy week as well, performing Macbeth in Galt Gardens, Wednesday, July 31, plus Thursday, Aug.1 and Friday Aug. 2. The show begins at 7 p.m. each night, Admission is by donation.
