Jazz jam and folk club open mics begin this week

This week is going to be off the hook with music for pretty much everybody.

 If your tastes lean towards the blues, Kelowna based bluesman Poppa Dawg comes to the Slice, Sept. 13. He draws from the well of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ronnie Earle, Duke Robillard and Robert Cray. There is a $10 cover for the show.


 If you like more alternative indie rock, Blueprint Records celebrates their birthday at the Slice with a big rock show including the Shematomas, Open Channels, The Yeah Dads and betterhalf on Sept. 15.
 If you like metal music, Parapsychotic, the Avulsion and Ted Bundy play the Moose Hall, Sept. 13 beginning at 7 p.m. There is a $10 cover for the show.

For something a little more mellow, if you enjoy folk music, the Lethbridge Folk Club begins their season with Edmonton musician David Ross MacDonald on Saturday, Sept. 15.

His vocals and fingerpicked guitar have been compared to Bruce Cockburn by Acoustic Guitar magazine. He has opened for cats like John Renbourne, Tony McMannus, Kelly Joe Phelps and Chris Smithers. The show begins at 8 p.m. sharp. Admission is $20 for members $25 for non members. It is the beginning of a very diverse fall line-up which includes Edmonton bluegrass band the Bix Mix Boys, Oct. 13 and Wendell and Wheat ( Katherine Wheatley  and Wendell Ferguson) on Nov. 10, plus Calgary western swing band The Hackamores, Dec. 8.

The Lethbridge Folk club has also begun their open mics for the season.


 The first bluegrass jam of the season, Sept. 7, attracted about eight familiar faces wielding an array of mandolins, guitars, banjos and even a dobro. If you like to play bluegrass, then come on down to the Wolf’s Den  at 325-5th St. So. Lethbridge, Alberta on the first and third Friday of every month. They begin playing at 7:30 p.m. There is a two dollar cover.

If you just want to play, then come on down to the Lethbridge Folk Club open mic, on the second and fourth Friday of the month. The first one of the season is this Friday. The folk club audience is among the friendliest and most supportive audiences in the city. Even I’ve been known to get up and play. Open mics begin at 8 p.m. There is a two dollar cover to attend it as well.

 If you play jazz music, Lethbridge Jazz trio HBO3 including Paul Holden, Brad Brouwer and James Oldenburg will be hosting the first  jazz jam of  the new school year at the Slice, on Wednesday. Sept. 12.


 Toques and Beards host tonight’s open mic at the Slice. Both get going around 9:30 p.m.

 And if you like music, make sure you go to CKXU’s Love and Records, Sept. 15. There will be lots of vendors, lots of records, food, a beer garden and a variety of bands playing everything including folk music, classical music, percussion music and punk/ rock music. beginning at 11 a.m.

If you like country music, Boom Twang is at Casino Lethbridge this weekend.
 Last, but not least, if you like your rock with a touch of psychedelia, check out Cosmic Charley at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Sept. 14.
 The Owl Acoustic Lounge is also hosting a fundraiser for the Birds of Prey centre featuring Redgy Blackout, Sept. 15.
