Lethbridge based songwriter Leeroy Stagger has turned his eye and ear to recording other people’s projects in Rebeltone Studio, his home based basement studio.
That means Stagger is able to stay closer to home with his young son Guth
rie, and wife at home, instead of spending most of the year on the road as he has done in the past. He has toured the world in a distinguished music career which has earned him critical accolades and songs placed in a variety of television shows like Sons of Anarchy, Heartland, Grey’s Anatomy and Degrassi.
“I built it three or four years ago in my home to record my own projects,” he said adding he has branched out to recording CDs for other well known southern Alberta musicians like Dave McCann, John Wort Hannam and Indio Saravanja.
His latest project is the new CD from Medicine Hat folk/ roots musician Jay Bowcott who was just in Lethbridge for a May 17 show at the Owl acoustic Lounge.
“ We’ll be tracking that in June,” he said.
He is pleased with how things are going with the studio.
Fellow Lethbridge musician and Stagger’s lead guitarist Matthew Robinson helps with a lot of the engineering of the projects.
“ It’s cozy, but it sounds really good,” Stagger described.
“ I‘ve set it up so I can make my own records and to help my friends record their records,” he continued adding he only works on four or five projects a year in the studio.
“ I only take on projects I really believe in,” he said.
“ But it’s cool. People seem to like it. They keep coming back. It has a more relaxed feel, so people can feel comfortable. People don’t feel like they’ve got to watch the clock. It’s like something you’d see in Austin,” he continued.
He hadn’t expected his studio to become so popular.
“ But it gives me a great opportunity to be at home. It is more important to spend time with my new kid,” he said.
He is playing a local gig as the Leeroy Stagger duo and Matthew Robinson, this Saturday, May 24 at CASA. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $20.
