“ It’s all good and exciting, ” said Barber from Trail, B.C. where she and their new son Joshua is accompanying her husband, CBC radio personality and author Grant Lawrence on his book tour.

“ It feels good. I’m looking forward to  the tour and coming back to Lethbridge. I’ve played that church before,” she said.
“ I love touring with a full band (guitarist Les Cooper, pianist Robbie Grunwald, bassist Steve Zsirai, multi-instrumentalist Drew Jurecka and drummer Marshall Bureau). The band is on fire,” she enthused, adding she is excited about playing the music off of “Fool’s Gold” which  includes elements of soul, R and B, pop, old country and a lot of jazz.
“I definitely wear my influences on my sleeve,” she said.

“It feels like a more confident, solid album,” she continued.
“ My head has been in a lot of jazz music lately. It really appeals to me,” she said.

“ I’m a modern singer songwriter, but  I’m very much influenced by my dusty old record collection. It’s a big part of my world,” she said.
She noted her show will have a lot of variety.

“This is my sixth record so I like to cherry-pick songs from each of my albums. I let the audience be my guide,” she said.
She brings  her son on the road.

“ He’s my road baby, my rock and roll baby. I started bringing him on tour with me when he was  six weeks old when she played a show in New York City,” she said adding having her son on board has meant she has meant a change in routine.

“It’s been a great positive spin. Instead of a lot of late nights in bars, there's a lot of early mornings in playgrounds. It’s been a positive change,” she said, adding having a child also influenced the recording of the new album.

“ I wrote most of these songs when I was pregnant and a wanted to have an album done and in my back pocket by the time I had him,” she said.

“ But I’m not writing any songs about being a mother. Not yet. I’ve been writing silly kids songs, but I already have a vision for my next album and that isn’t it,” she said adding she has written a children’s illustrated picture book illustrated by Sidney Smith.

Tickets for Jill Barber cost $37.50 at the Southminster United Church. Doors open at 7 p.m.. The concert begins at 8 p.m. sharp.
