Live events pick up this week

Things  start to pick up for the new year this week as there are several excellent shows happening.
 The University of Lethbridge Student’s Union brings back their Frostbite festival, Jan. 16 and 17.

 There will be a variety of ski related activities in the Grove outside of University Hall on Jan. 16,  Appropriately, Fernie based stoke folk band Shred Kelly will be a highlight of the Frostbite  Neon Chalet Cabaret in the University of Lethbridge, Jan. 17 Student’s Union Zoo featuring stoke folk band Shred Kelly plus rappers Rougies Clique and Montreal’s Botnek. Tickets are $20.


If you are in the mood for some punk music, Inferno celebrates a late New Year’s with Calgary punk band the Reckless Heroes and Medicine Hat’s  Ohmwar. Tickets are $10 for the show, which begins at 9 p.m.


 Thursday, Jan. 15 is a big day for concerts as The Odds, who had several hits  in the ’90s including “Heterosexual Man” and  “Someone Who‘s Cool. ” Even Cooler the Odds’s Craig Northey wrote the theme song “ My Happy Place” for the TV show Corner Gas. The Odds play Average Joes, Jan. 15  at 8 p.m. sharp. Tickets cost $20 in advance, $25 at the door.


 The other big event this week is two release parties for the eighth edition of the Fourth Wave Freaks zine, Saturday, Jan. 17.


 The first one is a fundraiser for Sik-Ooh-Kotoki Friendship Society. It takes place at the Friendship Society (1709 2nd Ave South) at noon. There will be a community potluck, desserts, hoop dancing and Jayme First Rider Dezirous performing. All proceeds go to the  Sik-Ooh-Kotoki Friendship Society.


 The second zine release party is at the Slice at 9 p.m. where Fox Eyes, Jeff Godin,  Wandering Tribe, Sonny Ray Brewer and rapper Heavy Knowledge will be performing. Admission is also $10  and includes a copy of the zine.


If you like blues rock, then Regina blues rock band  Below the Tempest have two shows this week— Jan. 16 at the Slice and Jan. 17 at  Backstreet South. Local indie rock band Silkstone open the show at the Slice. There is  $10 cover for that show.


 Open mics are now every Saturday at the Smokehouse with the Mark Hall Band including Jan 17. Everybody is welcome to play. There are plenty of open mics going on in Lethbridge. The Onion and  the Owl Acoustic Lounge both have open mics on Mondays, The Slice has their regular open mic on Tuesday  while the Owl features the L.A. Beat open jam on Wednesdays.  Bo Diddly’s also has an open mic on Wednesdays.


 If you want to laugh, Lethbridge improv troupe the Drama Nutz  host the first Uncensored Improv night of the year, Jan. 16 at Club Didi. The show begins at 8 p,m. There is  $10 cover.
And, last, but not least,  there will be another ukulele jam at CASA on Sunday, Jan. 18. So come on out and play.
