You may recognize Canadian born, New Mexico based multi-instrumentalist Awna Teixeira from bands like Po’ Girl, but she visits Lethbridge on her own, Aug. 21 when she stops by the Owl Acoustic Lounge.
She will also be at the Twin Butte Store, Aug. 20.
She is enjoying touring solo in support of her new solo CD “ Wild One.”
“ It’s been a blast,” said Teixeira, returning from a show at ArtsWells in northern B.C.
“ I’m kind of a one man band now, so I’ve got a kick drum on one foot and a tambourine on the other and I’m accompanying myself on guitar , banjo and accordion,” she said.
She released “Wild One” in March and immediately left on a solo tour of Europe and the United Kingdom before returning home to tour around the southwest United Stated around her home of New Mexico. She followed that up with a tour of the Eastern seaboard.
“ Allison and JT have their own thing going,” Teixeira said adding her set includes solo material as well as sometimes includes Po Girl material and some Birds of Chicago as she sometimes plays with them.
Teixeira was last in Lethbridge to open for Oscar Lopez who opened up the new CASA building downtown a couple years ago.
“ That was a nice show. Oscar was amazing. But one of my favourites was the show I played at the Geomatic Attic. It was a Halloween show and there was this great costume contest. Coming to Lethbridge is just so much fun for me,” she said.
She is looking forward to her next project.
“ It’s going to be an album of just accordion songs. There seems to be a demand for it from people. People are always asking me if I have an accordion album” she said.
She fell in love instantly as soon as she discovered the accordion.
“I found an accordion for $40 when I was living in Victoria and I fell in love with the sound. I taught myself to play it. I’m self taught on all of the instruments I play,” she said, adding the songs for the accordion album are half completed.
