Whoop Up Days and a lot more happening this week

There’s never an excuse to say “there‘s nothing to do in Lethbridge.” Especially not this week as there are a few big events happening in Southern Alberta this week.
 Whoop Up Days features superb live music throughout the week.

 But if your tastes lean towards more traditional country music, Floyd Sillito and friends will be at the Nord Bridge Senior‘s Centre are performing a tribute to the Alberta Ranch Boys. Tickets are $20 with the show beginning  at  7:30 p.m.
 Things rock at Exhibition Park for the rest of Whoop Up Days.


 Alternative rock duo the Standstills are on the Gas King stage at  9 p.m., Aug. 24. Calgary band Ten Minute Detour are on at 7:30 p.m.
The next night, Aug. 25  Kim Mitchell will show he is still a wild party, playing  his numerous  hits from the ’80s like “Easy To Tame,” “Rock and Roll Duty,” “Go For a Soda,” and maybe even some of  the rockers from  Max Webster.
 He is on stage at  9 p.m. Local rocking blues band Zojo Black opens the show at 8 p.m.


Things get turned up a  notch on Friday, Aug. 26 with a high octane performance from Monster Truck and local metal band Tyrants of Chaos.
And there is an eclectic lineup on Saturday , Aug. 27 with the country stylings of JJ Shiplett, some rocking blues from Angel Forrest and an exciting homage to the Band‚ The Last Waltz — A Musical celebration of the band featuring special guest performances from the Downchild Blues Band’s Chuck Jackson, Juno award winning bluesman Johnny Max and a talented up and comer Matt Weidinger.

But that’s not all that’s going on this weekend.
 The Ninth annual Bigwood Music festival, Aug. 27  features a variety of local  musicians The Supervoid, the Atomicos, Silkstones, Sparkle Blood and  the Dirti Speshuls plus Edmonton rock band Royal Tusk and Saskatchewan band Fancy Diamonds.
 The event is on the south end of Research Centre Road. Gates open at 6 p.m., Admission is $25.


Just down the road the Taber Cornfest features a lot of entertainment, Aug. 26 and 27. Calgary blues musician Erin Ross plays  at 4:30 on Aug 26 followed by the Moon Dawgs and the Shane Chisholm Band. And there is a heap of entertainment in Saturday with Jacob Rose, the Dusty Road band, Lethbridge funk, R and B and disco collective Hippodrome, Calgary based, Taber born musician Tanner James and the Best Intentions, Lethbridge country/ rock band Breanne Urban and Southern Flyer and the Chevelles at 9:30 p.m


There are several more low key shows happening at the Owl Acoustic Lounge this weekend as well Halifax, Nova Scotia bluesman Morgan Davis returns to Lethbridge,  Aug. 26. Winnipeg roots/country musician Richard Inman of the Madtrappers plays a solo show at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Aug 27.


 For more rocking blues and country, the Eric Braun Band plays Casino Lethbridge, Aug. 26. Also on Aug. 26, just out of town the debut performance of J Blissette with the Archaics will be happening. There is a  $10 cover for the show, which begins at 9 p.m.
There are a couple of exciting shows on Aug. 27.


 Metallica tribute Blistered earth hits Soundgarden, Aug. 27 at 9 p.m. And Calgary classic rock and pop band the Irregular Orchestra plays Beaches at 8 p.m.
Attainable Records features  Vancouver, B.C. based progressive metal band Neck of the Woods on Sunday, Aug. 28 with local metal band Caste of Shadows, pop punk band Youngbloods and local punk band the Space Wolves.

And a late announced show competes with all of Saturday night's fun. Several local musicians convinced the Slice to open for one last time for a special show, Saturday, Aug. 27. Performers include Rancho Deluxe, The Shaela Miller Band, the Necessities Don Cassell and the Juxtaposers, Tin and the Toad and Jon Martin. The Last Slice  begins at 9 p.m. Admission. Tyler Freed will be serving chili and corn bread. Doors open at 7 p.m.
