Garwin Poff celebrates birthday with his bands’ music

I was coming off an Outlaw Country Cruise high this week, so pretty much any music  is going to be anticlimactic for the next little while. Hypnopilot celebrating Garwin Poff's birthday. Photo by Richard Amery

But I did want to help celebrate local drummer Garwin Poff’s early birthday party at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Feb. 8.

The rare ticketed event at the Owl Acoustic Lounge was completely sold out so  there was barely any breathing room, much less elbow room.
I missed his band MTBC but was in time for his Calgary based Stoner rock band Hypnopilot.

They were excellent as always, with lots of energy and eardrum bludgeoning detuned riffs reminiscent of Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. I believe they were premiering some new songs for a new CD, but their show was just like being back in 1993 with plenty of detuned post grunge bass and guitar with those Queens of the Stone Age style high pitched, wailing vocals.

I missed their fellow Calgarians Shadow Weaver and Bazaraba, who play here a lot and always put on a good show in Lethbridge.
