The Definitive, a brand new classic revivalist Calgary band is a definitive mix of all their influences from Greta Van Fleet to the Red Hot  Chili Peppers and a healthy dose of classic rock  dashed on top of it.

 They play their second show at the Slice, Feb. 23 with 21st Avenue.

 

“ We played our first show around Halloween on Oct. 29,” recalled drummer Vaughan Xavier.

“It was so cool to see so many people out for our first time there, so it will be cool to see how many bring their friends,” added guitarist Dylan Jones.

 Bassist Evan Burns and vocalist Duke Domino round up the line up of the band, who formed almost a year ago in March 2023.

“We want to build our audience,” Xavier said, adding they are excited to return to Lethbridge.

 They released their debut album “ Worlds Away” last August

 The first single, “ Sugar,” has already passed 10,000 streams on Spotify.

 

“We’re really excited so many people are listening,” Jones said.

 Xavier noted they recorded their own  individual parts to the songs in their individual home studios with bassist Evan Burns, who is also an audio engineer, mixing it and mastering it in his studio. 

 

“ It was a  different experience,” Xavier continued.

“But because we recorded it in our own homes, we recorded it for free,” he said.  

 

Jones agreed it was a strange was to record an album, but their worked on the  songs together.

“We were in the same room when we worked on most of the parts,” Jones said, adding the Definitive bring together a variety of influences from the band’s members, especially classic rock on his part.

 

“ Absolutely classic rock is an integral part of our sound. I like Greta Van Fleet and Led Zeppelin,” he said.

 The band often draws comparisons to bands like the Sheepdogs and Black Crowes.

“ We get that a lot though I don’t know any Sheepdogs . I’ll have to look them up,” Jones said.

 

“ But Vaughan listen to a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers.Our bassist does a lot of slap bass and our singer listens to a lot of R and B and soul,’ he said, adding the Foo Fighters are also a big influence on the band.

“ It’s a cool melting pop of music,” Jones said.

“ It’s definitely a melting pot. When we get together, it just happens,” Xavier echoed, adding he its looking forward to playing with 21st Avenue.

“ They’re super exciting very high energy. And they also have a new single out,” he said.

 

“It’s going to be a high energy rock show,” Jones promised.

“It‘s great to meet new people,” Xavier added.

 

 The Definitive are setting up a busy year of touring.

“We’re going to tour out to Saskatchewan and then  to Winnipeg. And in June we’ll be touring B.C. All the way out to Vancouver,” Xavier noted.

 The members all have individual band they’d like to tour with.

 

“I’d like to tour with Greta Van Fleet. And  I Think Vaughan would like to tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Our bassist Evan is a huge Tool fan, so he’d like to tour with them,” Jones said.

“There’s a lot of bands who inspire us like the Foo Fighters. It’s a long list,”Jones said.

 

 Their new single “ Sugar” is out now. “ Nobody”s Business,” and Stella” will also be released as singles before they record the next album.

 

The Definitive and 21st Avenue  play the Slice, Friday, Feb. 23. There is a $15 cover for the show. Doors open at 8:30. p.m.
