Metal, Malanka and much more this week

Things are quickly picking up for live music in Lethbridge this week.

It all begins with the regular open mic at Club Didi tonight at 8:30 p.m. A  keyboard and guitar will be available to borrow, though other instruments are also welcome. There is a five dollar cover to cover the room rental.

There will be an excellentt Southern Alberta indie rock show at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Wednesday, Jan. 18, featuring Winnipeg rockers Living Hour, local band Wint and Medicine Hat multi-instrumentalist Curtis Windover. Admission to the show is by donation.


It will be a great night for roots and country music all over the city, Jan. 20. Local country band Alyssa McQuaid and Coyote Junction play Coyote Joes, Jan. 20 for a free show. And Fort Macleod’s Ryland Moranz returns to the  Owl Acoustic Lounge to play earnest roots and bluegrass music, Jan. 20 as well.


The other big country show, Jan 20 is at the Slice where Calgary country and roots musician Tom Phillips and Buck’s Row, his Blues Can band, will be holding court with Medicine Hat country singer Derek Hintz.
There is a $15 cover at the door or get tickets in advance for $10.


For something a little different, Club Didi is hosting a drunk improv night, Dec. 20. Impromptou will be performing hilarious shenanigans beginning at 9 p.m. There is a five dollar cover for the show.

Things get wild on Jan. 21.
 A big metal night at the Slice, Jan. 21, features local metal band Tyrants of Chaos, local rock band Outrun the Arrow and Extrados performing at Metal Meltdown beginning at 7:30 p.m.

 For blues lovers, Keith Woodrow and Paul Kype will be playing the blues for you beginning at 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21.


In the more pop vein, Club Didi hosts “Our Homo Highness: Dearly Departed” a tribute to gay icons who passed away last year including David Bowie, Prince and George Michael. The show begins at 9:30 p.m. There is a $10 cover.


And Malanka celebrations take place at the Southern Alberta Ethnic Associations’s new downtown location on Jan. 21. The annual Ukrainian new year‘s celebrations begin with cocktails at 4 p.m., dancing at 5:45 p.m, a dinner of cabbage rolls, pirogies and sausage followed by dance, Kolomeyka and live music with Absolute. Tickets are $50 for adults, $40 for students and seniors and $25 for children under 12, though if you just want to go to the dance, tickets are $20.


Another highlight of Saturday night, Jan. 21 will be the return of Edmonton songstress Kimberley macGregor, who will be performing with  fellow Edmontonian Elliot Thomas and local country/ folk duo Burning bridge aka Steven Foord and Megan Brown. Admission is by donation.
If that isn’t enough music for you, Attainable Records hosts an early alternative rock show, on Sunday, Jan. 22 with Edmonton  musician Wares aka Cassia Hardy, local alternative rock band Fox Eyes and J Blissette. The bands begin at 8 p.m. There is a $10 cover.
