Ben Worcester, Tyler Bancroft, Spencer Schoening, Jaycelyn Brown, Nathan Shaw
Vancouver's Said The Whale has been on a steady upward trajectory for the
past six years, as relentless touring and a prolific string of releases
have led to successes including a JUNO Award in 2011 for New Group of
the Year and nationally charting singles. In 2013, the tireless
five-piece — which includes dual songwriters Tyler Bancroft and Ben
Worcester, drummer Spencer Schoening, keyboardist Jaycelyn
Brown and bassist Nathan Shaw — will continue to break down doors by
releasing its most adventurous and hook-filled batch of songs yet.
The band formed in early 2007 and, following some early EPs, released
the debut-full length Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia in 2008. Said The
Whale began to amass a grassroots following through frequent tours, and
they scored a string of Canadian radio successes with the albums Islands
Disappear (2009) and Little Mountain (2012). These albums earned
attention from media outlets like Spin, BBC 6 Music, and Consequence of
Sound, and the band was profiled in the nationally televised CBC
documentary Winning America. Said The Whale has been nominated for two
more JUNO Awards in 2013 for Alternative Album of the Year and Recording
Package of the Year (alongside art director Andy Dixon) for Little
Mountain.
You are now, all of you, answering a call."
Their sound is as hard to describe as their name is to say. Ubiquitous
Synergy Seeker, better known as USS, are like a campfire after-party
with a jungle-rave vibe, progressively two-stepping their way to a dance
folk cuddle. Pure intention is the scope they aim through, eliciting
dance-floor eruptions is what they’re known for. Science rap on
breakbeat tracks anyone?
Ash Boo-Schultz and Human Kebab hail from the towns of Markham and
Stouffville, ON., respectively and respectfully. Although they attended
rival high schools, vocalist/guitarist Ash and hypeman/turntablist
extraordinaire Kebab didn't collide until years later. While employed by
the same local golf course, fate ushered them both into a beer fridge
that needed reorganizing.
A sudden alchemy filled the air between the artists. It was love at
first random concept - the catalyst moment to their self-proclaimed
"long, drawn-out, overnight success."
The memories are many. In 2008, the band maimed mainstage at 102.1 The
Edge's Edgefest alongside Sam Roberts, Linkin Park and Stone Temple
Pilots. Next was the World Electronic Music Festival, playing alongside
drum n' bass pioneers Andy C., Mickey Finn and DJ SS. Crossing into 2009
and over the US border, USS veered to the infamous Viper Room in Los
Angeles and then showcased the legendary Mercury Lounge in New York
City. That spring, they shattered the Sonic Boom Festival in Edmonton to
the frenzy of 11,000 fans. A spot at the Toronto International Film
Festival, three successful western Canadian tours, two CASBY Awards for
Best New Artist and Favourite New Single, a Canadian Independent Music
Award for Favourite Group of the Year, a Canadian Organization of Campus
Activities Award for Best Emerging Artist, and even an Applied Arts
Magazine Award for album packaging for Questamation, along with global digital sales have the world embracing the strange they want to see.
The wide scale audience singalongs and dancefloor pandemoniums are sure
to continue. USS are singing and scratching up new storms, alongside
producer Tawgs Salter (Lights, Elliot Yamin, Josh Groban). The studio's
secluded sanctuary allows for frequent intermissions of wondering the
woods, wishing on stars, and quiet moments of self-reflection.
Lustre Creame
The band Lustre Creame came into existence in the winter of 2007. Three
individuals sharing like-visions of moving over and beyond the rock and
roll status-quo: that of Aaron Trozzo, Willis Orriss, and Christopher
Lipinski. It was this instantaneous mesh of ideas, creative drive, and
individual blue-collar jadedness that had Lustre Creame immediately
punching out new and exciting original material. As time ran on, it
became obvious that the band had something of a special rock & roll
relationship; individualistic in nature and breaching pure-rock-fury.
Lustre Creame have been described as “...the most entertaining live act
in Lethbridge, not to mention the most technically proficient” but
seeing is believing. Every song has been crafted from the ground up,
largely abandoning the standard popular approaches to verse/chorus/verse
writing methods, but maintaining values of melody, structure, and
dynamic. Think of their musical styling as a delicious layer cake
incorporating elements of progressive rock, funk, grunge, blues, world
rhythms, and a thin stratum of weird pop. It it this flexibility within
their music that makes them able to adapt and earn fans in any type of
live performance setting.
Lustre Creame has released two EP's
and one full length album (independently written, recorded, mixed.) It's
been said that the future holds good things for those who are willing
to work hard for them; if this bears any truth, Lustre Creame should
have a very interesting future ahead of them.

Funk Hunters http://thefunkhunters.com/
The Funk Hunters are one of Canada’s busiest electronic acts. Performing their signature high-energy DJ sets and groundbreaking Audio-Visual show at some of the world’s most popular music festivals and clubs has earned them an international following. The duo (Dunks & The Outlier) first teamed up because of a mutual love for “Hunting” good music, and today this passion still rings true as they continue to champion the simple but often lost idea that the music itself comes first, regardless of attachments to genre. The Funk Hunters name is now in high demand, receiving bookings, accolades, and remix requests from all corners of the electronic music scene.
Armed with 4-turntables, their very own custom synched visuals, and the unique ability to create live mashups and remixes, their live show stands out. Seamlessly blending original productions with everything from Hip Hop to House, Glitch Hop to Drum & Bass, and everything funky in between, The Funk Hunters create original sets never replicated. Refusing to be confined by genres, it’s not uncommon to find this duo headlining an all bass music festival one night and then performing a funk, soul, or boogie set the next. Their new Audio Visual show continues to see them push boundaries, merging their skills as Music Producers, Visual Artists, and DJs, into a truly unique and live experience. By producing their own custom content, they’ve managed to avoid the stigma associated with ‘music-video DJs’ yet still preserve their improvised multi-genre style DJ performance – only now they’re equipped with synched visuals, controlled straight from the turntables.
2012 has already seen the duo tour through the UK & Europe (playing 17 shows across 7 countries), play headlining slots at some of North America’s most popular music festivals including Burning Man, Shambhala, Bass Coast, MEG, Evolve, and the Big Time Out, as well as launch a 3-month North American Fall tour taking them from coast-to-coast with shows all the way from New York to Hawaii. This year has also marked the birth of their new label, ReSoul Records, pushing sounds found from within Canada’s thriving electronic music scene out onto the international stage. They’ve also recently completed a month-long tour of Brazil, several cross-Canada tours, and continue to receive invites to share the stage with musical pioneers like Z-Trip, RJD2, and Cut Chemist.
On the production front, their original music and remixes have been played around the world in clubs and on radio-stations alike. Signed to ReSoul Records, Roca Records, Fort Knox Recordings, Ghetto Funk, Manmade Records, and Bombastic Jam, The Funk Hunters’ releases prove again that their musical taste and influence spans all genres. Their recent releases on ReSoul continue to chart in the #1 spot in all genres on the UKs JUNO Records Sales Charts while their free downloads and classic remixes continue to gain them top spots in both the Soundcloud Hot Tracks charts and their fans iPods alike. With the push to produce more original music and further evolve their live stage show, some exciting tours and major collaborations are on the horizon for Canada’s fast-rising electronic duo.

Daniel Moxon - Guitar, Organ, Drums, Vocals and Exuberance
This three-piece garage rock(and roll) band of almost twentysomethings
have set out on a voyage to bring rock music back into the Canadian
music scene by impregnating the minds of young, impressionable,
adolescents with bright trebly guitarbage, fuzzy overpowering bass
grooves, bursting post-tempo drum beats, and not quite incoherent
anti-poetic lyrics.
Foam Lake

Paul Ross, Barrett Ross, Tyler Ross, Kalen Ross
Four blood brothers creating infectiously catchy rock n roll laden with
synth textures, dynamic rhythms, contemplative lyricism and luscious
guitars. That’s the genius of Saskatoon’s post-pop rockers Foam Lake.
Equally at home with swirling keyboard tones as jagged driven guitars,
they far exceed the sum of their individual parts.
Comprehending the importance of maximizing their dynamic range, their
debut full-length Force and Matter swings from absolute thunder to
quiet whisper at the drop of a hat, while smartly abandoning frivolous
embellishment and instead delivering only exactly enough of what is
needed.
Musical kinships like this don’t come around often anymore – listen up while you can. (Tyler Stewart)
