Over 200 students from G.S. Lakie Middle School are ready to dance.
Dance Revolution 2016 is set to hit the stage next week with a series of shows at The Yates Memorial Theatre.
Lakie dance students have been hard at work the past few months in preparation for the production, which takes place at the Yates Jan. 27 and consists of over two hundred performers. The school is performing five shows in one day, with show times at 10 a.m., noon, 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
With the amount of students involved, it has taken a school-wide effort to prepare for the school’s big dance show, according to Performing Arts teacher Kristi Legge.
“Our Lakie staff and student body has been extremely helpful and accommodating in preparation for this show,” she said. “Countless hours have been spent preparing costumes, props, video effects, music, lighting, schedules and the list goes on. None of this would be possible without the help from our amazing and talented Lakie staff. As for our dancers, let's not forget the countless hours spent attempting choreography in the "sweat box!" I am truly grateful for all their hard work.”
Legge added the show will appeal to audiences that appreciate a wide range of music and dance routines.
“In this year's dance production, you will see an eclectic mix of music and dance styles, from booming bass to angelic sounds of the harp, we have something for almost everyone. The audience will indulge in an elegant tango ballet that is accompanied by our very own gifted Lakie guitar teacher. We are attempting to bring the chilly outdoors, indoors, with an African-infused piece from Disney's hit Frozen.”
Along with the entertainment value, Legge added the audience will also experience a moving final number, as students will tackle a very important issue.
“Our finale in the show this year is very special to me because the students are attempting to convey a powerful message. The dancers are hoping to motivate themselves and their peers to stop and think about their behaviour towards others. They are presenting the idea of starting a Revolution at G.S. Lakie - the idea of creating a school without bullying. We know this is a rather large goal but even if they can inspire a few students, it's worth it.”
