For the past number of years, Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Club of Lethbridge has been educating numerous Grade Three classes across Southern Alberta on Ukrainian culture, music, food, and geography in addition to various regional dances.   This year’s shows will be held on Tuesday, May 10 at the Genevieve Yates Memorial Centre.  These shows are very popular with teachers as the material rounds out Alberta Education’s curriculum on Ukraine, making it come alive for their students.   These shows frequently sell out and have waiting lists of schools hoping to participate.   Troyanda’s Artistic Director, Dean Mackedenski,  provides an informative and entertaining presentation which includes teaching 8 and 9 year olds  dance moves characteristic of a  particular region of Ukraine.  Fifteen schools from around southern Alberta will be attending this year’s event.

“It is a real treat for the younger dancers to perform for their classmates”, says volunteer Linda Wever.  “They probably don’t mind missing a day of school either,” she laughs.  Wever explains, “Undoubtedly, this is one of my favourite Troyanda shows.  It’s very educational.  Alberta and Ukraine have a lot of similarities.” Alberta has a lot of landmarks recognizing Ukrainian heritage and influence.  “It is very informative for our dancers and parents as well.”

This year’s sold out shows will serve as a warm up for Troyanda’s Vesna which is to be held the following day, Wednesday May 11 at 7pm. VESNA is a Ukrainian spring celebration and Troyanda recognizes this every year with their year end show which is open to the public.  Tickets for Vesna are available through the Ticket Centre and can be purchased by phoning (403) 329-7328 or by going online at www.lethbridge.ca/tickets .  Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors.  Children 12 and under tickets are $5.  This year’s spring celebration of dance will have more international flare as Troyanda will be sharing the stage with Mi Columbia Linda and an African Dance Group.  Don’t miss Troyanda’s performance at 7 pm on Wednesday, May 11 at the Yates Memorial Centre.

Now celebrating their 21st year, the Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Club is a not-for-profit organization with members that volunteer their time to preserving and promoting the artful heritage of Ukrainian dance here in Lethbridge.
Currently under the instruction of Dean Mackedenski and Anastasia Sereda, the Troyanda Ukrainian Dancers have over 35 members ranging in age from 3 to timeless.  There is no limit to those wanting to begin, continue, or renew a love of Ukrainian dance.  For information please e-mail us This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
