Winnipeg pop/ rock band the Liptonians like to experiment with all sorts of sounds  from odd organ sounds to horn sections, but for now, they are just enjoying touring on their new CD “Let’s All Go Marching Into The Sea.”The Liptonians return to the Slice, April 13. photo by Richard Amery
“It’s been a pretty good tour so far,” said founding member and vocalist/pianist/ reed organ player, Matt Schellenberg adding the band has played Canadian Music Week and just returned from South by Southwest in Austin.

The band, including founding member guitarist Bucky Driedger and relative newcomers, drummer Michael Jordan, guitarist/ Hammond organist and autoharp player Mitch Braun and bassist Levi Penner, return to the Slice, Wednesday, April 13 for a show with Toques and Beards.

“With three new guys in the band, it’s the best the band has ever been,” he said.
“So far the reception to the new album has been very good. It is number nine on CBC Radio 3’s charts and it is getting good reviews in the Globe and Mail and Exclaim and those places,” he continued adding he is looking forward to returning to the Slice.

“We’ll be playing a couple of sets,” he said adding they enjoyed the winter festivals like Canadian Music Week.
“It was good. We got a really good showcase and we met a lot of people who create experimental music like we do. It’s very cool to be accepted by them,” he said the SouthbySouthwest Experience had a similar feel.

“It was overwhelming. It was an exercise in feeling small. It was a similar feeling to Canadian Music Week but on a much bigger scale. And to see bands in the same vein as us, just to be considered part of that group is amazing,” he said adding he is pleased with the direction the Liptonians are taking.

“It’s really exciting,” he said adding the always thriving Winnipeg music scene, with bands like Royal Canoe (a band he shares with Driedger), Boats, who just signed to the Kill Rock Stars record label, and Imaginary Cities,  is on the verge of breaking big.

The Liptonians will also be performing a Canada Day Show with the Winnipeg Symphony.
“They do that with a band every year, so when they e-mailed us and said they wanted to work with us this year, we jumped at it immediately. It’s pretty huge for us. they hired an arranger to arrange some of our music for them,” he said.
