Good week to play the blues in Lethbridge

E-mail Print PDF

This week will be a great one for Edmonton blues players visiting Lethbridge.
But first there are a couple significant jam sessions happening tonight.

Cudos is calling it quits for live music by havinCurt Young playing the Owl stage. Photo by Richard Ameryg one last jam session hosted by James Clare tonight beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The other big jam session will be at the Slice tonight, beginning  at 7 p.m. Friends and family with gather to remember the life of Jimmy Coates, whom many of the local music community remember fondly for being a tireless supporter of live music. There will be a five dollar cover charge to offset costs of the funeral. Who’s Yer Daddy will start things off at 7 p.m.

One of my absolute favourite acoustic bluesman Marshall Lawrence makes his Lethbridge debut at the Owl, May 14, with Johnny Greenshields.

Lawrence is billed the doctor of the blues as he has a doctorate in psychology, but quit in 2009 to concentrate on his other passion— music.

He has released three CDs— his plugged in, rockin’ debut “Where’s the Party,” the acoustic follow up “The Morning After,” and his latest — the acoustic “Blues Intervention” which was released last year.
There is no cover for the show. John Greenshields will be playing first, followed by Marshall Lawrence at approximately 10:30 p.m. There will be no cover.

For something a little more amped up, don’t miss the return of the Boogie Patrol, who return to the Slice, May 12.
The Edmonton based quintet taps into the essence of the blues and gets the audience moving to the groove, as their last sold out show several months ago will attest.

If you missed them then, catch them Thursday, May 12 when they return to the Slice with new drummer Jeff Lisk.  The Darryl Düus band opens the show. Tickets are $15 at the door or $10 in advance from Blueprint or the Slice.

And for something a little more “psycho” but with horns, Edmonton rockabilly/ psychobilly band the Raygun Cowboys make their Lethbridge debut at the Slice, Saturday, May 14.

Tickets are $10 in advance, or $15 at the door for the show that is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.
Also on Saturday,  Jimmy Rankin plays a late announced show at the Geomatic Attic, Saturday, May 14. The show will begin sharp at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for members, $27.50 for non-members or $30 at the door.

Marq DeSouza is looking forward to returning home to Lethbridge for a few days and to play an acoustic gig at the Owl, May 13 with Spencer Jo and the River Ramblers. He is looking forward to not only playing, but also visiting old friends.

Other shows worth checking out are local modern original rock duo Jackson E who play Jimmy’s Pub, Thursday, May 12.
Up and coming Medicine Hat country star Craig Moritz is releasing his latest CD at Average Joes, May 14 as well.
Sunday is going to rock at the Slice as well as Kirby vs the Human Race and special guest Alyssa McQuaid plays the Slice, May 15.

The second episode of Average Joes open for the bands contest is also this Thursday. Nobody showed up for the chance to open for classic rockers Sweet for the first episode, May 5. Eventually Jolene Draper and Murray Nelson showed up as did bluesman Curt Young. Both of them did such a phenomenal job that judges declared a tie so they could both compete in the finals in June. Especially as Nelson also decided to add some extra special guitar to Young’s three song set.
