Psychedelic rock and pop with Big Jim and the Twins and Planet Telex

E-mail Print PDF

The Slice was rocking with Big Jim and the Twins, Planet Telex and Megga Rourke, Dec. 7. While I missed Rourke’s set, I arrived in time to catch Big Jim and the Twins’ John Greenshields playing with Big Jim and the Twins. Photo by Richard Amery psychedelic groove.
The trio, John Greenshields and Lustre Creames’s rhythm section of Geoff Orriss and  Chris Lipinski played a set  of wah wah drenched, psychedelic blues rock which sounded like a mix of Chris Colepaugh and the Cosmic Crew, Blues Traveller and a touch of Wild T and the Spirit.

They added a little funk and enraptured a good sized crowd coming out on a foggy, snowy night. They played a set of original music including a song that sounded similar to Del Shannon‘s “Runaway.”Planet Telex’s Tyson Wiebe. Photo by Richard Amery
Planet Telex closed the show as guitarist/ vocalist Tyson Wiebe observed he should be studying for finals, then began with “Great Dane,” a song about drinking in a bar.

They played a solid set of up tempo ’90s rock along the lines of Weezer with just a touch of Husker Dü. Many of the songs came from their CDs, including the most recent one, ‘Wednesday,” released earlier this year but added a couple covers from bands like the White Stripes.

They had some of the audience singing along with the “na, na, na, na” chorus, on one of the show’s highlights “Hold Steady,” which is also one of the highlights from their most recent CD, Wednesday.
