Rock and roll through the end of the World

E-mail Print PDF

If the world actually does end, Dec. 21 as the Mayan calendar predicts, there is certainly an excellent soundtrack leading up to it this week.
Once again this week is all about local bands playing all over the city, with one notable exception.

Golden based southern rock band Willhorse will be releasing their debut CD at the Slice, Dec. 20, when they play a special show at the Slice with Lethbridge coal mining themed country group the Coal Creek Boys. The Coal Creek Boys have a new CD in the works and are  still supporting their debut “Hard At It In Old Town.”

There are a couple End of the World parties on Dec. 21. Both Lethbridge progressive rock trio Lustre Creame and Toques and Beards will be rocking in the end of the world at the Slice, Dec. 21. Billie Vegas will be rocking the Casino both Dec. 21 and Dec. 22.

For something a little more low key, James Oldenburg has a busy end of the world day. He is playing jazz music with HBO3 (Paul Holden and Brad Brouwer) at the Trianon at 5:30, and then will be bringing his band to Ric’s Grill for the night. Dale Ketcheson will be playing classical music at the Mocha Cabana.

The Owl Acoustic Lounge also has a novel idea for an end of the world party on Dec. 21. Instead of putting on a big rock show, they are turning off the PA system and lights, instead lighting the room with candles and encouraging people to bring their own instruments to play around their tables and maybe walk around to other tables and play there as well.

Chances are the world will carry on as per usual, Dec. 22, just in time for the weekend. There are a lot of options for live entertainment including Paul Kype and Texas Flood playing energetic blues rock at Legends. If you missed them over the past couple weeks and at the Slice, Dec. 15, make sure you catch them at Legends.
Cosmic Charley will be bringing some funk flavoured rock to the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Dec. 22.

Meanwhile if you want to dance, Hippodrome returns to the Slice, Dec. 22 as well to play  your favourite disco , R and B funk flavoured hits.
For something a little more mellow, Karen Romanchuk returns to the Mocha Cabana to play her own country/ folk music, Dec. 22 as well while Tom and Curt will also be playing country music at the Front Row Pub the same night.

But that’s not all, if you need one last blast before Christmas, or just want to escape the family for a few hours, Rancho Deluxe and Rob Ursel will be rocking the holiday season, country style, Dec. 23 at the Slice. There is a $10 cover for the show. There will be a draw for a door prize which costs either a donation to the food bank or five dollars which will be donated to the food bank.
Tonight Jesse and the Dandelions host a Christmas flavoured open jam at the Slice.
