Morgan Davis adds humour to the blues

Morgan Davis plays his cigar box guitar. Photo by Richard AmeryIt’s always a pleasure to hear Morgan Davis play the blues. He returned to Lethbridge to play the Owl Acoustic Lounge, June 29.

He played a gut wrenching, yet whimsical set of acoustic blues and folk delivered in a voice reminiscent of Dr. John.
He delved into blues history, playing a few songs by Muddy Waters, blues classics like “I Ain’t Satisfied” and went back even further. He even sang a tribute to Stomping Tom Connors.

The most humourous  moment of the night was his cover of Unknown Hinson’s  “Polly Urethane” about a blow up doll.
He picked up his home made three string cigar box guitar for  a handful of songs including Robert Johnson’s “When You‘ve Got a Good Friend” and a few bars of the Rolling Stones’  Honky Tonk Woman.”

He switched to another guitar to play some slide blues including “Walking Blues” then played some Blind Willie McTell.
There was a lot of chatter coming from the back of the room, however a good sized crowd sat enraptured closer the the stage and boisterously applauded after each song.
