There is no moss growing on Rae Spoon, who not only has released a new album “My Prairie Home,” but has also released a Rae Spoon returns to Lethbridge, Oct. 11. Photo by Richard Amerymovie about the album and touring the new music and life as a transgendered musician. Spoon has also just released a new book and is working on another book with Ivan Coyote called  “Gender Failure.” They have the same publisher.

“With a book, it means we could be in libraries or over in Europe or places where I don’t get to very often,” Spoon said from Vancouver   for the premiere of   the “My Prairie Home ”movie. Spoon plays the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Oct. 11.

Spoon is pleased with the new CD which was released on Aug. 13, which encapsulates the variety in Spoon’s music.
“There’s gospel music on it and grunge music and some rock and roll and some country,” Spoon said.
“ It’s all the types of music I’ve performed over the last 10 years.”

Spoon grew up in Calgary in a highly Evangelical Christian household where being homosexual wasn’t easily accepted.

“ I came out in high school. It was hard, but I’m glad that I did it,” Spoon said adding there  weren’t a lot of resources for Gay and Lesbian teens  then, though there are more now.

“Teachers are more supportive now,” Spoon observed.
“Wait until you are in a safe situation,” Spoon recommended for other gay and lesbian people who are considering whether to come out.

While gay and lesbian issues were a prominent feature in Spoon’s earlier work, the focus has changed.
“I write about more universal stuff now rather than more about my personal history.”

Spoon is proud of the film “My Prairie Home.”

“It’s in two film festivals. It’s a documentary and a music film, Spoon explained. They followed me around while I was on tour. It‘s a feature length film, 77 minutes long,” Spoon said adding response has been good.
Spoon has been enjoying living in Montreal for the past five years.

“The gay and lesbian population is comparable to a lot of cities,” Spoon  said.
Spoon said it is tough to choose a favourite artistic endeavour.

“I like it all, but  I enjoy performing music the most of all,” Spoon said.
Spoon always enjoys performing in Lethbridge.
“I’ve always had good shows there.”
There is no cover for the show, which begins at 9 p.m.
