If you aren’t going to South Country Fair this weekend, then bang your head, pogo and mosh  with Edmonton based punks MSA (Millions of Smashed Assholes) and Abuse of Substance who will be playing the Moose Hall, July 19  on the their Hillbilly Punx tour with Taber acoustic-punks the Mangy Mutts and Bob Scallywag.MSA and Abuse of Substance play Lethbridge, July 19. The all ages gig begins at 9 p.m. There is a $10 cover.

“I love all ages gigs because  the kids just go crazy. You give them something and they'll remember you the next time you come,” said MSA frontman Myke Peters returning home from his day job as a tattoo artist.
The core of the band, including guitarist Sean Reif, bassist  Andrew Hogenbirk and drummer Brandon Devost grew up playing together in St. John,  New Brunswick, then  moved out west to the Edmonton area in 2007 when they decided they wanted to start playing again.

“ We were playing together for about three years on the east coast. And now  it's been about 10 years because  when we moved to Alberta, we wanted to play together again,” he continued.
Now MSA is working on their new CD which will include punkified covers of ’80s hits like Midnight Oil’s “ Beds are Burning,” the Outfield’s “Your Love” and Neil Young’s “ Heart of Gold.”

“ We picked the Midnight Oil cover as kind of a joke. We wanted to do a cheesy ’80s song. But this is a great song. For the Neil Young cover, I had just picked up the harmonica and wanted to play it on something,” he said.
“ The Outfield cover is another cheesy ’80s cover that everyone knows, but it isn’t overplayed like other cheesy ’80s songs like“ I Ran’ and ‘the Safety Dance,”” he said.
they are working on releasing the new record on vinyl.

They are excited about this short and sweet tour with fellow Edmonton area  punks Abuse of Substance.

“ We‘re playing Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge and Calgary on the way back,” he said.

“We go back a ways with Abuse of Substance,” he continued.

“ They‘re a three piece band, but you couldn’t tell. They’re hard as fuck,” he said.
The Moose Hall show begins at 9 p.m. July 19. There is a $10 cover.
