The Perpetrators ‘Off the Hook’ as always

E-mail Print PDF

It is always a great time when Winnipeg blues-rock trio the Perpetrators come to town if only to see the lineup  frontman/ guitarist Jay Nowicki puts together.

No matter who it is, it is always rock solid and they are completely locked in. And, because I used to be really close to the Winnipeg music scene,  a Perpetrators show is almost always an excuse to catch up with long lost The Perpetrators’ Jay Nowicki. Photo by Richard Ameryacquaintances.

Their awesome, Aug. 2 show at the Slice was no exception. This time, the Perpetrators featured drummer Emmet Van Etten of the Weber Brothers band and Tom Twisty Fodey on bass, who used to play with the Winnipeg punkgrass band the D-Rangers and who still plays with Andrew Neville and the Poor Choices.

I was too busy dancing with pretty girls to  take many notes of the show, but as usual there was plenty of up tempo, bluesy, gritty, guitar powered, toe tapping blues rock guaranteed to get all the feet the room moving — as they did as the dance floor filled up pretty quickly.

They focused mostly on music from their most recent CD “ Stick Em’Up,” though they played several of their classics like “Six Pack” which ended their first set.

They didn’t play “Malt Liquor” or any Hound Dog Taylor, one of Nowicki's big influences, but did play their hot cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Off the Hook.”
So it was awesome as always. Al Lukas and his band rushed over to the Slice from their gig at the Owl Acoustic Lounge to check out the show.
The New Weather Machine opened the show with a solid set of loud, energetic David Bowie inspired classic rock style original music.
