You can tell it's September because there is starting to be a lot of big shows happening.
The Geomatic Attic opened their fall season on Monday, Sept. 8 at the Southminster Church with the Good Lovelies and Royal Wood, but they have their first show at the Attic itself with Birds of Chicago aka newlyweds J.T. Nero and Po’ Girl’s Alison Russell on Sept 12 at 8 p.m. sharp.
They just released a new CD of ethereal, laid back indie folk music.
The Lethbridge Folk club began their season last week with the first bluegrass open mic of the season at MJ's Cycle (1502 – 2nd Avenue South). Bluegrass jams take place on the first and third Fridays of the month and begin at 7 p.m.. There is a $2 cover charge.
So that means the Folk Club opens their season of open mics this week, Sept. 12 at the same location.
They begin at 8 p.m on the second and fourth Friday of each month. There is a $2 cover to attend. So come out and play for one of the most supportive audiences in the city on the Wolf Den's intimate stage nestled at the back of MJs cycle.
Edmonton based folk singer Scott Cook returns to Lethbridge this week as well when he plays the Slice, Thursday, Sept. 11 with The Second Chances and Jared Klok. There is a $10 cover for the show, which begins at 9 p.m.
The Onion also restarted their Monday night open mic this week. Jazz jams also begin at the Slice this week on Sept. 10. HBO3 (Paul Holden, James Oldenburg, Brad Brouwer) host the popular monthly jazz jam, which will then be every third Wednesday at the Slice beginning in October. The trio are also part of another band, Bandemonium which will rock Casino Lethbridge on Sept. 12 and 13.
If you missed Rusty Waters and the Broken Troubadours’ last Lethbridge show at the end of August, Rusty Waters plays his brand of alt country and folk music at the Mocha Cabana on Sept. 12.
But most of the music on the weekend is Sept. 13 thanks to CKXU Love and Records 2014.
The University of Lethbridge based community radio station presents a day full of live music, family fun and records, lots and lots of records in Galt Gardens.
There is no charge to attend. There is also no cover for rocking after-parties at the Slice featuring War Baby and Black Mastiff, a great blues show at Plum with the Marshall Lawrence band and Paul Kype and Texas Flood and folk at the Owl Acoustic Lounge with Calgary's Savk and Vancouver's Ben Everyman and a dance party at Studio 54.
The other big event this weekend the Windy City tattoo weekend, which runs Sept. 12-14 at the Exhibition Park West Pavillion. It will feature tattoo artists from Victoria to Newfoundland and a lot from Alberta.
It will also feature a variety of entertainment including comedy daredevil Ryan Stock, Lwethbridge country band the Coal Creek boys, the Rig Pig Apparel girls and much more. Admission is $15 a day or a $20 weekend pass.
The University of Lethbridge also starts off their live music series in the University Theatre, Sept. 13 with the Sirocco Saxophone Quartet which features members from the UK and Germany.
They are making their first visit to Canada and Lethbridge as they are recording their second album in the University of Lethbridge Digital Arts Studio.
Tickets cost $20 regular, $15 for students and seniors. The show begins at 8 p.m.
