Whiskey Sheiks have fun with strings

E-mail Print PDF

Edmonton string band the Whiskey Sheiks showed they were out for a good time, Dec. 12 at the Owl Acoustic Lounge.

They started their set by half jokingly telling the chattering crowd that “ We’re not plugged in at all, so we’re asking you to please shut the hell up,” which was ignored. The band weren’t bothered as they grinned and launched into Corb Lund’s “Good Copenhagen.”The Whiskey Sheiks playing upbeat string band music. Photo by Richard Amery

The band played beneath two microphones hanging above their heads and played plenty of super fiddle, thumping stand up bass, chunking mandolin, guitar and lots of vocal harmonies.
They played plenty of upbeat originals including  a rousing “Yo Girl” and everybody soloed.

They played a song about cyclists and added a kazoo solo and went political for a moment with “Woody Guthrie Working Man” which featured a harp solo.
