There really is no good excuse not to be out on the town this week. ArtsDays began on Sunday and there are events happening throughout the week downtown at CASA, plus Art Walk, Friday and Saturday, several workshops and seminars and much more at the University of Lethbridge throughout the week, most of which are free.
The big Arts Days event is the Live in Lethbridge, Community Cabaret at CASA hosted by the Drama Nutz, Thursday, Sept. 24.
There will be a variety of performances and improv comedy. Admission is five dollars. The performance begins at 8 p.m.
The other big Arts Days concert is at the University of Lethbridge, Sept. 25.
The University of Lethbridge Faculty Artists and Friends concert at the University Theatre, Sept. 25 features clarinetist Margaret Mezei, horn player Thomas Staples, pianist Glen Montgomery and Musaeus String quartet performing Carl Reinecke's Trio for Clarinet, horn and piano plus Mozart's Clarinet Quintet. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $20 regular, $15 students/seniors.
Apart from Arts Days, there is a cornucopia of amazing music of all styles happening. Especially if you like rock and punk music.
It starts early in the week with Winnipeg indie rock band Yes We Mystic, who return to Lethbridge to play the Slice, Sept. 23 in support of their new EP “Vestige.” There is a $10 cover for the show which also features Ryland Moranz and Ashley Northey.
Wednesday is a busy night as Inferno hosts a big hip hop show featuring Transit and well known, influential Providence, Rhode Island based rapper Sage Francis, Sept. 23 as well. Tickets for that show are $30 at the door. The Owl Acoustic Lounge brings back Zachary Lucky the same night as well.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge also has a Thursday night show this week, with local country band the Old Man River band performing, Sept. 24.
If you have fond memories of the Electric Eye Music festival from back in May, then you can relive some of them at the Slice, Sept. 25 for the Electric Eye Music Festival Volunteer appreciation night, where several of the highlights of the festival will be returning.
Performers include Regina based atmospheric country band Snake River, fellow Saskatchewan psych rock/ noise rock band the Faps and Edmonton punk band the Versions. The show begins at 9 p.m. Admission is by donation.
But if you like rap battles, Inferno has another big rap show, Sept. 25. The smoked out showcase features Lethbridge rappers F-Bomb, Pyke, Urban Voyce, Medicine Hat’s Geminik and guests from Vancouver. Doors open at 8 p.m. There is a $10 cover.
Nobody can accuse Inferno of being stuck in a rut as they have a big punk show on Sept. 27 featuring The return of the Golers and Calgary’s Mandible Klaw at 9 p.m. There is a $10 cover for the show. Local metal band the Avulsion are also on the bill.
Punk and metal fans have a tough choice on Sept. 26 with two huge shows happening simultaneously.
To allow people to attend both, the reunion show of Calgary street punks No Coast Hardcore will begin early at 7 p.m. at the Moose hall. Calgary punk band X-Ray Cat, Vancouver surf-punk band the Tubuloids, thrash band Speed Demon and No Coast Hardcore will be playing beginning at 7 p.m.. There is a $7 cover for the show.
The Slice has a metal show the same night featuring Edmonton metal band, Mortillery, Calgary punk band the Reckless Rebels, local rock band Caste of Shadows and punk band No More Moments. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m., with the music beginning at 9 p.m.
It is also a great week for roots and blues music.
Lethbridge folk/ rock / jazz band the Junkman’s Choir are back together for a show at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Sept. 26.
Calgary blues/ roots musicians opens the Calgary Folk Club season, Sept. 26 in the Lethbridge College Cave.
The show begins at 8 p.m., Sept. 26 in the Cave at Lethbridge College. Wayne Thordarson will be opening. Tickets cost $25 for members, $30 for guests which includes a year long membership.
The folk club has their open mic on Friday at the Wolf’s Den aka MJs cycle, Sept. 25— one of several open mics happening this week. Steve Keenan, Greg Gomola and Kelly Klimchuk host an open mic at Honker’s Pub, Friday night, Sept. 25. They also host an open mic, 3-7 p.m., Saturday afternoon, Sept. 26.
The Geomatic Attic has their second show of the season, Sept. 29 with Winnipeg folk rock band Chic Gamine as well as Toronto/ Nashville outlaw country musician Lindi Ortega.
The show begins at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $42.50.
Last but not least, The Slice brings back singer songwriter Mike Edel for an early week show, Sept. 28. There is an $8 cover for the show
