Groove Apostles get crowd grooving to jazz

E-mail Print PDF

The Owl Acoustic Lounge was packed, Oct. 3 with an audience who wanted to groove with local band the Groove Apostles.
Bassist Daniel Best, keyboardist , Daniel Yaretz, guitarist Drew Erfle, drummer Matthew Hellawell -DrumThe Groove Apostles vocalist Shelby Wilson and saxophonist Vaughan Henning. Photo by Richard Amerys, saxophonist Vaughan Henning  and vocalist Shelby Wilson, who has been with the band for two years, played a whole lot of toe tapping jazz.

Wilson showed off her impressive vocals and sassy attitude as she sang a variety of jazz and R and B standards and rejigged pop songs.
“It's All About the Bass” was a highlight as was “We Are Family.”

They showed they are a talented band with lots of attitude and unstoppable groove. The band members wore white smocks labelled with what each band member played — sax, keyboards bass.

Very tasteful saxophone solos stood out as did the  subdued keyboards. They even added a little bit of gospel and a whole lot of soul. Shelby Wilson has a fine voice. She took a break in the middle of  the second set to let the band play instrumentals.

They gave a shout out to members of  the University of Lethbridge jazz appreciation class in audience writing reviews as part of  their class.
