There is always a lot happening in Lethbridge. This week seems busier than usual with all sorts of music, concert series and open mics happening.
There are three great shows on Oct. 24, which will make for some tough decisions.
The Lethbridge Folk Club has their open mic on Friday night at the Wolf’s Den. But they also have a great blues show that really shouldn’t be missed as Forget, Saskatchewan based Delta bluesman Ken Hamm will be playing the Cave at Lethbridge College. Local blues musician Leon Barr will opening the show at 8 p.m
Hamm will humble any guitar players in the audience. Admission is $25 folk club members, $30 for invited guests.
That show is going head to head with Hawksley Workman, who the Geomatic Attic is bringing to the Yates Theatre, Oct. 24 with special guest Fiona Bevan touring on her debut solo CD. She is best known as the co-writer of One Direction's hit “Little Things.”
Tickets for that show are $35.
The show begins at 8 p.m.
After that the Slice brings back fantastic funk/ blues and soul band the Boogie Patrol. There is a $10 cover for that show, which is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.
Medicine Hat folk/ roots musician Jay Bowcott will be over at the Owl Acoustic Lounge.
But the week begins with a couple excellent shows. Dreams: A Classic Rock Fantasy, the ultimate classic rock tribute hits the Yates Centre, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m.
It stars international Stevie Nicks tribute sensation Julie C. Myers. She has been part of numerous tribute shows including “Play Boys Girls of Rock and Roll” and her own Stevie Nicks tribute “Nearly Nicks.” Tickets are $50.
That same night up and coming piano pop singer Mike Evin will be at the Owl Acoustic Lounge for their Wednesday open mic. There is no cover for that show.
That is competing with a wicked pop rock show at the Slice with Michael Rault. There is a $10 cover for the show, which begins at approximately 9 p.m.
Friday night is a good night for the blues with a house concert featuring Victoria musician Jesse Roper, who just finished a successful Peak Performance showcase. Tickets are $20. As usual Honkers features a Friday night open mic, Oct. 23 with host Steve Keenan who also hosts a Saturday afternoon open mic, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m.
For a touch of folk, rising Newfoundland folk duo the Fortunate Ones play the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Oct. 23. They have had songs placed in the TV show Heartland and are part of the Allan Slaight Juno Master Class program.
There is even rock and roll on a Monday as Finger Eleven make a long awaited return to Lethbridge to play Soundgarden with Head of the Herd, Oct. 26. They will be joined by a special local opener to be announced as Finger Eleven have been holding a contest to choose a local opener in each city.
Finger Eleven are supporting their new CD “Five Crooked Lines.” Head of the Herd have also released a new CD, “Birds on the Roof.”
Tickets cost $40. Doors open at 7 p.m.
It is a busy Monday with Peterborough based alt country/ bluegrass, Cajun duo the Mayhemmingways returning to the Owl Acoustic Lounge and an open mic at the Onion also happening.
