A variety of Christmas shows and a whole lot of rock this week

E-mail Print PDF

It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas — again.

There are two big Christmas shows this week. Right off the mark, Nova Scotia born, Alberta based country star George Canyon is excited to share the Christmas spirit, country style. Zojo Black plays the Slice, Dec. 19. Photo by Richard Amery

He plays the First Baptist Church, Dec.16 at 7 p.m. Expect to hear Christmas favourites, plenty of stories and perhaps ever a preview of his upcoming new CD.
The show begins at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 16. Tickets are $20.

The next day, get the jazz for Christmas, and perhaps relive one of the highlights of this year’s Lethbridge Jazz Festival. Vocalist/ trumpeter/ band leader Johnny Summers visits University Theatre, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. He is supporting his brand, spanking new Christmas CD “When It’s Christmas Time,” so expect plenty of Christmas cheer, plus pop, jazz and groove. Tickets are $35 for adults and or $25 for students and seniors.

In a similar vein, if you play tuba or euphonium or just like to hear those instruments. TubaChristmas happens at CASA, Dec. 19. If you want to play holiday favourites, then register at CASA at 9 a.m. and get ready to play.

A novice rehearsal is at 10 a.m. with a full rehearsal at 11 a.m. The recital will be  at 1 p.m., which is free to attend. It costs $15 to register to play. To register, please contact Rene van de Vendel at 403.308.0688 or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

In the spirit of the season, local churches will feature Nativity presentations.  One of them is the LDS church’s 29th annual live nativity presentation, Dec. 22-24 at 6-8 pm. every 20 minutes each night at the LDS Church on Forestry Avenue South.

But, if you want to rock this week, there are plenty of opportunities. Montreal psychobilly trio The Gutter Demons play Inferno, Dec. 16  with the Raygun Cowboys at 8 p.m. and local bands the Spacewolves, Gender Bender and Chief Mountain. The show begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

Average Joes brings in One Bad Son, Dec. 17 with Australian rockers the Lazys. That show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the show.
The weekend is mostly about local musicians, with  local rock band Soup of Flies rocking Casino Lethbridge on the weekend and local blues rock band ZoJo Black returning to the Slice, Dec. 19. Also on a blues note, Steve Keenan hosts a blues jam at Honker’s on Friday night as usual and an afternoon jam. Fei Fei Du plays the Mocha Cabana this weekend. He switched weekends with James Oldenburg last weekend.

There is also an excellent rap show on the weekend as Sweatshop Union’s Pigeonhole plays Inferno, Dec. 18 with special guests Millz Skillz, DJ Fuze and Pyke Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Doors open at 9 p.m.
