The past couple of weeks have mostly been about big shows at the Enmax Centre, but everything else is happening this week. And I mean everything from folk, alternative country, electronica, blues, one act plays and more big shows at the Enmax Centre.
A couple of excellent indie rock/ folk inspired pop shows kick off the week on Wednesday, April 6. Calgary born, Southern Gulf Islands based roots/ country pop musician Lauren Mann returns to Lethbridge to play the Slice, April 6. Calgary indie rock / pop band Raleigh return to the Owl Acoustic Lounge on April 6 as well. They play after Bored Games night is finished.
And if you are downtown for lunch and are in the mood for traditional country music, Floyd Sillito returns to the Lethbridge Public Library for a free noon hour concert.
You can take a breather on Thursday with Are You Smarter than a Padawan pub trivia at the Owl, because everything happens over the next few days.
If you are ready to laugh and maybe cry, Playgoers of Lethbridge presents the annual One Act Play Festival at the Sterndale Bennett Theatre, April 8 and 9. Seven short plays will be taking place over the course of the two days including several original scripts from local playwrights. The shows begin at 7 p.m. Admission is only six dollars a night.
It is party time after that.
If the Real McKenzies didn’t give you your fill of bagpipe powered rock/punk on March 16, London/ Cambridge, Ontario based Celtic rockers the Mudmen tear up the stage at Soundgarden, April 8 with the Lethbridge Firefighters Pipes and Drums. The show begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door.
There is also a variety of local music happening, April 8. Local country band Hurtin’ return to the Owl Acoustic Lounge April 8, while local blues rockers Zojo Black rock Casino Lethbridge that same night. Duelling Pianos also returns to Average Joes, April 8.
And the Lethbridge Folk Club will hold their monthly open mic at Casa on April 8 as well beginning at 7:30 p.m.
There is a big electronica and dance show at Studio, April 9 with Forté night 2, featuring a variety of DJs including Millz Skillz, Trell, Flamboi and Nocturne. There is no cover.
In a similar vein The Electric Eye festival is quickly approaching so there is a big fundraising show for the popular alternative rock festival at the Slice, April 9.
There are a couple of key jazz and classical music concerts featuring local orchestras. The U of L Wind Orchestra is ready to Tango with their April 7 performance at University Theatre. The concert features Sara Gleck as flute soloist and will feature the premiere of a new piece by student composer a in residence Carey Lyn Holt. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 regular, $15 seniors and alumni and $12 for students.
The U of L Jazz Ensemble performs at the University Theatre, April 9 with special guests, 2016 Juno award winning trumpet player Al Muirhead. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., Tickets are $20 regular, $15 seniors and alumni and $12 for students.
It is also a big week for country music.
Gord Bamford (“Where a Farm used to Be,” “Country Junkie,” “Is It Friday Yet,” “Farm Girl Strong,” “A Cowboys Last Ride, “ “Day Job” and Drinking Buddy” and “Blame It On That Red Dress”) and Joe Nichols ( “Freaks Like Me” “Brokenheartsville,” “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.”) with Trevor Panczak will be playing their many radio hits at the Enmax Centre, Saturday April 9 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $51.25, $71.75, $86.75.
The next night, North Bay’s Cory Marquardt, who has several radio hits including “Smartphone,” “21” and “This Man” will be stopping by Coyote Joes to rock the joint with his band, on Sunday, April 10. Tickets cost $20 in advance, $25 on the day of the show.
Earlier that day, the monthly ukulele jam returns to Casa from 2-3 p.m.
The fun doesn’t stop there. Alt rockers Sloan will bring you back to the ’90s, April 11 when they stop by Average Joes as part of their “One Chord To Another.” They will be playing the entire album from track one to the end including that albums hits “The Good In Everyone” and “The Lines You Amend” and “Everything You’ve Done Wrong.” They will follow it up with a set of their other hits. Tickets cost $20 in advance or $25 on the day of the show. The show begins at 8 p.m.
If you aren’t burned out by then there is a punk show at the Tilted Kilt, April 12 with No More Moments, Space Wolves, Caste of Shadows and West of Hell. Admission is $10.
