Things got a whole lot funky at the Slice, July 8 courtesy of Edmonton based blues/ funk band the Boogie Patrol.
A decent sized crowd was well warmed up by local funk R and B trio Adequate, featuring one of the busiest man in Lethbridge show business, Scott Mezei, who had already played two shows that day with New West Theatre’s production of “Jukebox.”
I caught the end of their set and made a point of staying most of the night for the Boogie Patrol, who always put on a fun, sweaty show.
They were in fine form as usual. Rott’n Dan Shinnan supplied impassioned vocals and a heap of amazing harp solos.
Yuji Ihara easily traded leads with new guitarist Chad Holtzman and even played some tasteful guitar harmonies together while bassist Nigel Gale and drummer Emmett Van Etten were locked in together, getting the room all sweaty with dancing and good times and good vibes.
I got there just in time to hear one of my favourites “ Ain’t Much For Talking,” which they dedicated to me.
They were in a classic funk and R and B mood for their second set, which began with James Brown’s “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” and turned into a huge jam on several James Brown hits.
“Shake your Moneym
aker” was a highlight after that.They played a lot of different songs all filled to the brim with funk and the blues.
They were still going strong around 2 a.m. as they launched into another of my favourites “Bathe With Your Woman.”
