Mike Fury belt out twisted rockabilly

E-mail Print PDF

Sometimes a shot of twisted rockabilly is just what the doctor ordered, so I was glad to catch Calgary rockabilly Trio Mike Fury 4 including guitarist Mike Hell, upright bassist Tom C Smith and Mike Fury standing, singing and playing a stripped down two piece Mike Fury rocking the rockabilly. photo by Richard Amerydrum kit including a snare drum and cymbal at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Friday, May 26.

They had a relentless beat, a little attitude and were a whole lot of fun. Mike Fury played every tangy rockabilly / country lick in the book through a set of cold country classics, several originals and a heavy, psychobilly tinged version of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” featuring the infamous horn lick as part of the guitar solo instead of at the beginning of the song.

They reminded me a of a more bare bones Reverend Horton Heat.

Some of the highlights were an original “London Road,”  the u toe tapping “We’re Going to Boogie” and that twisted take on ”Ring of Fire.”
